S124 arrived this afternoon - and it seems pretty lovely.
Being a 12v diesel, it's a slow old thing, but it is perfect for wafting around in - feels solid and well built, and no issues yet. Electric aerial and sunroof both surprisingly fully operational!

The pics have gone. And this I'd like to see. Once you get used to it, I expect you'll find it's not that slow. They're in their element on the motorway.Being a 12v diesel, it's a slow old thing, but it is perfect for wafting around in - feels solid and well built, and no issues yet. CL600 bi turbo M275.
More reliable and much much more performance than those earlier cars.
I know both are sold but just wanted to show that they are out there within thread budget.

Jealousy isn't a feeling that shows itself to me very often...until I started reading this thread.
Bornite W124 estate on the right year. You're one lucky man.
Wow - I hadn't realise quite how lucky I was, then. It seems like a nice car, and I thought the colour quite suited it (an earlier car I tried to buy was Beige, so this is a definite improvement!) - but my research hadn't got as far as which the best year is - was "K" the first year of the facelift cars, then? Mine seems unusual in that it's a 12v diesel in the facelift body (I think!?) - does that make sense?Bornite W124 estate on the right year. You're one lucky man.

It's infuriating, isn't it? Just gets peoples back up.More importantly though, just promise me you'll keep that sensible purchase for your daughter to yourself, ok? If my brood discover that not everyone does in a motoring sense to their kids what I've done to mine, I'm doomed.
Winter tyres - hmm - I'm a convert, and it would seem strange not to equip Miss Stegel 1 with the capability to deal with the snow-pocalypse we're always threatened with "next winter".

Mini-Barge update.
A little while back I bought a rather fetching Mercedes 190E, ostensibly as a family runabout and city car. The plan - insofar as there is ever a plan in this place - was for it to become the family runabout. All was fine in theory, but some of you may recall that the car's reception wasn't entirely positive, and various female members of famille deGaulle demonstrated a somewhat unbecoming emotional reaction. And not in a good way.
Luckily, the motoring gods conspired to help me remove the festering sore from their sight and consciousness. Less luckily, this involved a 'failure-to-proceed' experience. Luckily it was me in the car at the time. Unluckily, despite me thinking I'd managed to get away with it by keeping it secret, my mechanic chap inadvertently dobbed me in it, so the girls found out. And mocked. Without mercy and without respite.
Anyway, absence can be helpful. In the way that you introduced that unsuitable girlfriend to your smart relatives only once, and then hoped they'd forget her, the 190's absence at the home of my mechanic (whilst he disappeared on a refereeing trip to the US) allowed the tears to dry and the emotions to settle. Peace was restored; I was off the hook.
And then, hurrah, today the car was returned. The culprit was the fuel pump relay, since replaced, and the expert gave the whole thing a decent going-over. The only other thing that needed doing was a new windscreen wiper, so I'm feeling as though some shed Karmic-balance has been restored.
The next job is going to be a bit of bucket and sponge sudsy-love, and I'll replace the cheap nasty tyres with something more mainstream before the autumn, but for now I shall rejoice in the smug glow of knowing I was right all along. At least I will until madame returns next week.
Here it is, in all its unwashed green and tan glory. It was in thread budget, but only just. It's a nice way to travel.

Even as a car buyer with a decent set of stones on me, that pair are scary. I'd be spending a bit more I think as that plate / paint job / 6 year old 1000nm dynoplot are red flags. Would be fun until it broke mind you. More reliable and much much more performance than those earlier cars.

Added a neat gadget to the 55k tonight - plugs into the 3.5mm jack and is a little black box that creates a wifi zone in the car that you can share streaming music and YouTube / iTunes to. £30 all in and solves the problem of more modern media in an older car.

Mini-barge lifted from the retro thread. Under-budget, but a few jobs to do should lift it into here.
I may, allegedly, have made contact with vendor.Ray Singh said:

Shame it is a catd - but pictures of damage do not look too bad and no history.

What was that I was saying only a couple of days and a few pages ago?!
But, the car is sold already.
I wonder to whom . . . . . .
(Flight and ferry booked for 19 Aug)
I just can't help myself.

Congrats, that looks lovely!
Thanks both.I'll be able to provide a better update in a couple of days when I've been able to give it a decent drive!
Just after it was delivered, I took if for a short drive, the sun was shining, I opened the sunroof and I put on Radio 2 and Matt Munro launched into "on days like these" (as from the start of the film The Italian Job) - I thought that was a pretty good omen!!!

thanks SHOWith a modicum of TLC that will become the most dependable thing in your life.
I'm already finding it's quirks and liking them. I was just putting a couple of bags into the boot and trying to see how the "cargo cover" works - it took a while before I spotted the "hooks" on the tailgate - another great MB solution - very clever indeed!!
