(The 0-60 seems slow for the engine? I know that's not the purpose of a barge, but still...)

If it's the same gearbox as the E60 then au contraire my friend, it is actually a very good manual box indeed. It's a short throw and feels very tight.
The problem... is the clutch
I still haven't perfected the change on downshifts and I do think from my research that it's to do with the CDV (clutch delay valve) that BMW have fitted. You can have it removed which apparently improves things no end. I however am a bit wary of straying from OEM, but this is one 'mod' that really tempts me. I should really get around to it.
A good friend of mine's wife has a 320 coupe and he was moaning about the gearchange until I suggested he remove the CDV. Apparently it was quite a revelation and really sorted things out. The problem... is the clutch

I also regularly passenger in an Alpina roadster and the gearshift is terrible, again thanks to the CDV which my colleague is too lazy to sort (very easy job by all accounts)

It's got Distronic, Arimatic, 4 zone climate and Keyless go. Forget about performance, that's great spec. Love the wheels as well. That style is very common in 16" on the lesser models but only the E500 got these in 17" AFAIK.http://www2.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

The M113 5.0 isn't the greatest performance engine but the torque curve is very smooth and they are known as a bullet proof modern V8. I thought the 0-60 was closer to 6.0 dead, but who knows?
Presumably it won't come with that plate though?!

Parkers has it down as 6.3 secs, it is a heavy beast though at 1863kgs which partly explains why the 301 BHP is somewhat blunted.http://www2.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

I think one of our regulars went to have a look at that car (it has been for sale a while) and returned with adverse comments.

How interesting, and I would guess very rare. I read (on here somewhere) that the manual gearbox in these is pretty poor.
I think I may need to buy a manual car with a large engine (so not a merc then!) There doesn't seem to be much choice in budget aside from S4s, eg

Ironside had a SL600 with the 7.3litre V12 by AMG. It took him forever to sell it, both times he had it. I seem to recall it went for either 30k or 40k in the end. In Europe—and I note this one's LHD—they are hawked at €50k to €75k. The Hairpin Company have a nice, early SL600 with low miles for which they are somewhat optimistically seeking £35k. But to sell that blue car at anything like that price or even half that price, it needs to presented rather better than it is.
Given it's a Japanese import it's fairly safe to say there's bugger all history to back up the mileage. That advert is shockingly poor for the money they're asking. Bound to need recommissioning after many years of sitting around. Wonder how that pimp spec AMG S class the Scandinavian chap imported from Japan has worked out? That would've been similar, I suspect, albeit at more sensible purchase cost.

Just curious, what does the CDV actually do and what's the problem with it? I think I have it on my Z4 3.0Si.
I have an LS1 engine/box from a Camara in my Cobra Replica, GM had a similar thing, they intentionally introduced a restriction in the clutch fluid pipe to prevent mechanically unsympathetic drivers banging the clutch out and smashing the plate against the flywheel - in essence it just slows the fluid down enough to give a cushioned effect when releasing the clutch quickly (introduces clutch slip when none is wanted!!!). Took a 6mm drill bit to resolve that one ;-)

Is this underpriced by someone who doesn't know these cars? Or is it a shed? I can't tell and it's a long way from me. I resolved this morning that I'd like a w124 coupé (I know, a c124), preferably an early one, 3.0litre, in smoke silver.

Some excellent pictures here on an E46, but looking on RealOEM it's near-identical for an E85 as well.

Must have had the diamond cut wheels refurbished recently. Can't see any milking.
Seller states 5 speed, car has the 4 speed.
