It's the fit, as mentioned above. They look all wrong around the indicator and at the meeting with the 'a' pillar. Plus, a good paint job costs 2 grand. A pair of MB wings costs £450. Pattern wings maybe £200. So it is either spoiling the job for a ha'peth o'tar or it is a crap job: either way, irritating. Anyway, the genuine ones are not that prone to rust. Most are over 20 years old now.

I am finding myself obsessed with this green coupé: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1994-MERCEDES-BENZ-E-CLA...

This is what I can see that puts me off.
- old phone aerial in the rear screen
- Diavia air con system
- cracked piping on centre armrest
- model designation in wrong place
- crack in black plastic boot handle (do this and the previous item indicate a bad paint job?)
- er, er, that's it...

But cast your steely glaze over it V12 AMG and tell me what I am missing. And I like the colours, OK?

I'm still looking for my holy grail W124, but whilst I don't like green, I saw that yesterday on my daily peruse and thought it looked fantastic, great colour combo in my eyes

I do like green, and I think it looks fabulous, especially with that interior.

I'm not surprised you like the colours - they're brill! Green and tan really works - I'm biased because I have it on my 190.

In addition to what you've noted:
Looks like the electric aerial may not retract.
Bumper scuffs.
Driver's door sacco looks slightly 'off' (although I note that they can often look like that but are actually fine).
The way the seatbelts hang makes me suspect the butlers don't work.

So, really all just the usual stuff you'd expect to see on a car that age.

As you know, you'd need to budget for the aircon not working as they hardly ever do without money being spent and the vendor would probably mention it if it works well.

I find the lack of glovebox on the airbag-equipped 124s a bit of a nuisance because there's only so much other space for the detritus that seems to accumulate.

Does £4.5 seems slightly rich? Regardless, there's lots to like there.
I get a very good vibe from that car. Looks much nicer than the green black one.
The NS door needs adjustment to the hinges but that is very common on the C124.

Can't blame him for having the wrong colour mats. OEM ones have been NLA for well over 10 years in anything other than black.

The only thing i'd add to the already mentioned points is that it only has rear mudflaps. Luckily they are OEM ones and MB did sell them in pairs so not necessarily that they have been lost. Most likely is that the bodyshop who has done the front wings has been fed up with the rusty bolts and just left them on the old wings. A shame.
A couple of aftermarket fuse holders/wiring visible. Hopefully not an alarm system buried in there.

P.S. Seller gets extra points for shooting pics showing off the pillar-less design.

I'd noticed those things, too. The wings look genuine, at least. The mud flaps don't bother me but the funny blue wires up front are a bit odd. I have a good sparky, though, so that can all be taken care of. I wonder whether they are to do with the Diavia a/c? The car was on sale at Avantgarde years ago, I can't recall how much for, I think 10grand. I sent the seller a long list of tedious questions but I haven't heard back. I'm itching for this one!

There are, in my opinion, few cars that can pull off that sort of shade of green. A W124 is, however, one of them. Looks great with the tan interior, though I'd personally prefer the slightly paler mushroom/cream.

I will have to get an XJR6 at some point. This one seems like honest value.

I absolutely cannot get excited by the Japanese Mercedes, but look at the nick of that interior; the rear cabin looks like new.

And yet a bargain.

Did you know the engine is certified by the FAA for use in aircraft? Bolt on some wings and a propeller...

I feel the same way JK, but a friend of mine has one of these which he picked up for £1,500 and the interior is nothing short of astonishing. It is plastic at its very finest.

Gents, there's a W124 buyers guide in the current edition of Practical Classics.

If you're anything like me, you're an avid collector of buyers guides for cars you already own!

I think I have a brand new set of 4 mud-flaps if you decide to buy it and want them.

I almost want to buy that just to ensure the old girl gets it's dealer stamp for this year.

Here's another good looking Lexus, but am I right to be suspicious about those number plates? They don't look right. And it's in Upton Park.

That is ridiculously cheap, even with a few niggles... As long as it's not rotten it'd be a good buy.

That doesn't help, Derin. I have bid (but obviously am below the reserve).

It's fairly cast iron, an E320 coupé, right? I mean, you'll always be able to get half-decent money for it, right? Even a green one with orange seats, right?

You can always swap it for a car you used to own in 2 years wink.
