I guess slow was a bit harsh. The 500 I drove was the older one with the M117 engine and the 4 speed box. It was adequate for a vehicle like this, but the same engine in the W126 is a much, much faster car.

On a year 2000, I guess yours was the M113 with the 5 speed auto. Probably a much better drive. The only more modern ones i've driven have been diesels and the new G350 is very well suited to this vehicle with loads of torque.

Anywho, miles out of the price range of this thread now!

Good spot. Looks like a decent start-point. A thousand quid chucked at that could turn it into something quite nice.
For me a good start point if it was on for about £800, looks neglected and battered and that's just what's visible. (I fully appreciate it's a sportline)

Forgive my mere 124 stubble, but why is a Sportline so special? I assume it has stiffer, sportier suspension?

I have lodged Ebay bids on not one but two smoker barges. Say no more except that I hope I don't win both. Come to think of it, I hope I don't win either... You'll be the first to know, either way. (And Mrs r129sl will probably be the last, ho ho.)

Probably worth saving if the rear sub frame mounts are not rotten.
The list of items that need rectifying is very long from a quick look at the pics.

I'm not a fan of nautic blue though. Not at all, not on any model.

The V8 and automatic gearbox from a Range Rover (circa 1998). They're great!

But again, they cost something like 15 grand for a good one.

I sold the car and the next owner replaced the front disks which he told me solved the problem. I presume they had warped because they weren't that old and weren't worn out.
Assumed warped discs can often be confused with pad deposits left on the disc, especially when cheaper pads are fitted, or on cars that see little use.

Also possible that disc hasn't been fitted properly in the first place. Removing old discs usually deposit loads of rusty crap on the hub, and only the smallest crumb of crud on the mating faces can sit a disc out of true from the start.

My XJ6 suffered quite a pronounced brake shimmy, unusual as the previous owner had recently had new front discs/pads fitted. Being a tight northern bugger, I usually try the free stuff first. So off came the discs, sanded with random orbit and 100 grit, hubs spotlessly cleaned, discs rotated 90 degrees and re-fitted. Can't comment as to whether it was deposits or badly fitted discs, but either way, no more shimmy smile.

It's definitely worth mentioning that clean hubs (I mean spotless) can make a big difference to brake wobble. Wire brush and rotate the discs, makes all the difference sometimes.

The Barge Gods have given, but they also take away...

Yesterday, the S124 went in for its MOT. It passed. Hooray.

Today, as I hooned back from a tip-run, sorry visited the local recycling centre, the car juddered and lurched under full acceleration. It was fine with a gentle press, but full throttle made it cough and splutter like a TB victim. Any ideas?

Wiring harness?

Does it feel like it's missing on either one or two cylinders?

They'll be a mechanic on here somewhere to say I'm wrong but don't they rev the st out of your car these days for the MOT when they do the emiisions? Maybe an old timing belt or tensioner has been pushed to the limit?

Does it feel like it's missing on either one or two cylinders?
Written from a position of complete ignorance and incompetence [/disclaimer...] it may be a hose or something has popped off or split, meaning engine not getting enough air under acceleration?

Doesn't really feel like it's missing, it just lurches under heavy load.

I'd wondered if it might have something to do with the Test, but it can't be, surely?

Interestingly, the low fuel light came on during the journey so I'm wondering if some crud got sucked up from the tank - plausible? I've brimmed the tank now and driven it hard but it's made no difference.

Guess I'll have to see if the local chap has time to look at it before the removals men arrive on Monday. I think I'm paying for his holiday home!

MAF?

That is the air mass meter in the air intake, circled in red below. It can go bad when contaminated with dirt or oil. It can also be sabotaged by an unscrupulous garage, but it seems unlikely. It could also be that some incompetent has removed the lead and forgot to put it back for some reason.
