Does it feel like it's missing on either one or two cylinders?
Doesn't really feel like it's missing, it just lurches under heavy load.

I'd wondered if it might have something to do with the Test, but it can't be, surely?

Interestingly, the low fuel light came on during the journey so I'm wondering if some crud got sucked up from the tank - plausible? I've brimmed the tank now and driven it hard but it's made no difference.

Guess I'll have to see if the local chap has time to look at it before the removals men arrive on Monday. I think I'm paying for his holiday home!
Could be dirt in the fuel filter.

Isn't that a W124 in the background as well, picture 2?

Sure it's probably a shed with no ride comfort, but it looks fking brilliant.

That is the air mass meter in the air intake, circled in red below. It can go bad when contaminated with dirt or oil. It can also be sabotaged by an unscrupulous garage, but it seems unlikely. It could also be that some incompetent has removed the lead and forgot to put it back for some reason.
Visually that thing looks fine - the cable is attached firmly. Is there a visual check of the thing itself required - do I have to take it out or something?

Mr R129 sl developed a misfire under load, was fine under part throttle no jerking as such, just stopped accelerating. A new bosch MAF from a german ebay vendor sorted it: http://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/germancarsensors?_trksid...

They'll be a mechanic on here somewhere to say I'm wrong but don't they rev the st out of your car these days for the MOT when they do the emiisions? Maybe an old timing belt or tensioner has been pushed to the limit?
The faster half of the test is a max of 3k RPM, not enough to bother any engine, but enough to light the cat up.

I really like that, even in yellow with the black wheels.

It is, but it earns maximum demerit points for the worst possible aftermarket grille!

Has anyone here successfully used the 8 or 16 pin diagnostic socket on 124s and their brethren - I made an LED test box up, but I have to say the results / sources of information on the 'net just confused me!

Tough crowd. Ad says current owner (and nothing to suggest it's not the vendor) since 2000.

It's the wonky front foglight that's sending me into a flat spin.

You can takeout out and clean it but on the strength of my speculative and dodgy diagnosis you risk fking up something that wasn't broken in the first place.

That just about sums up my approach to DIY home mechanics actually.

Perhaps it knows about our email exchange last week and is just throwing a strop.

Have you tried grovelling?

P.s. The "accident repair centre" has come up with the princely sum of £4600 as the cost to fix the e61. And, remarkably, it seems they're going ahead with it. So the old girl should live to fight another day!

Oh without doubt. Every old car I've ever owned has got pissy with me at some stage over something I've said, thought or done. Vindicative old drama queens that they are.

My 2 green Mercs are actually quite different colours! Perhaps the fact that only one is vaguely clean plays a part, but Derin mentioned in his S124 ad that he'd chosen badly when making his 50:50 call.

nice pic, though it looks like the body and sacco panel colours on the two have been reversed

Perhaps I was being a touch harsh and reading into it a little too much.

White divides opinions, but I rather like it here. A red or green interior would be my preference though.
