The website lists the details in German and (slightly dodgy) English:
http://www.kienzle.de/uploads/media/MCR1016BT.pdf

So I suppose you can change it to English, but it doesn't actually list that feature as far as I can see

After I had mine installed I calledKienzle in Germany to ask; it's in German only I'm afraid. It only says 4 or 5 things and you get used to it.

Depends what you need, the S124 (and I assume the W is a typo) is much much smaller than the S211 so can't really be compared. Having said that I have an S211 and would prefer a S124 by a long chalk.

Hi Bigben,
Would you mind expanding on this? I've had my 124 for 5 years and I'm pretty happy with it, all niggles ironed out and front wings replaced etc. I do hanker after a 211 though maybe just for a change, I'm not sure. What makes the grass greener on my side of the fence?

Here are my thoughts:
- better the devil you know. I know my 124, what the problems have been etc. shouldn't get any particular surprises. I'd thought late model 211s were pretty solid so was surprised at the reaction to the 280cdi I posted yesterday.
- 124 is going up in value, most 211s are going down still.

- For the 26mpg I get in the 124 I can't help thinking I should be able to drive something with a bit of oomph. I only do about 5k a year so it's not that big a deal.
- the 124 probably won't last forever, so I do need to change one day
- wife prefers the look of the 211 interior and might be inclined to drive it, she's not keen on the 124. We've not sat in a 211, but being quite short she says the 124 doesn't have enough adjustment to give her a perfect view out.
- Being more modern, perhaps a 211 is safer prospect for my 3 sons

I actually thought that the 211 and 124 were comparable in terms of size but I've not looked at any numbers, my guess would be that the 211 is bigger on the outside and the 124 same or bigger on the inside due to modern packaging etc. I suppose I'm only really concerned about interior space... don't want a smaller boot or in the gladiatorial arena my little boys ride in because they still have bulky chairs.

The W124 is a Lot easier to place on the road due to the very square corners, and narrower body.
The visibility is excellent due to the proportion of glass to body is greater on the W124.
One niggle that ALWAYS annoys me about the S211. I am 5'11" and can stand under the tailgate on the S124 and S210 with ease. S211 tailgate doesn't open as high so have to crouch to avoid hitting my head. Just a small thing I know.

The S211 moves the spare wheel from the left hand side to under the boot floor so has more width in the load space.
Not measured height but I would guess the S124 wins that marginally.
2 things that I do notice now getting back into an old W124 after doing most of my miles in more modern metal.
-Headlights and mirrors are very poor.

We used to run a fleet of S124s as delivery wagons, replaced by S210s, replaced by S211s. Finally went back to S210s after a few dodgy S211s. All outsourced to couriers now so no chance to properly compare the S212 to it's predecessors.
Apart from the rust the S210s are an excellent work horse.
The S124 250Ds were by far the most dependable cars that just went and went forever.

I'd MUCH rather a good 400 as opposed a sketchy 430.

I would prefer a W124 as I prefer the look of the older cars and older cars in general, the reason I didn't get one is they are getting on a bit now and so it would be more likely to be a project than the S211. We (it is mainly the mrs' car) needed a reliable car with a big boot to support the setting up of her new business, a 211 fitted that bill better.

I have just looked it up and was surprised to see that the W124 is not much smaller than the S211, about 10cm in each dimension, this is testament to the styling of the W124, they look tiny in comparison.

The key advantage of the S211 is the more modern engines, the 3.2 straight six diesel is a fantastic engine, plenty of pull and fairly decent economy. I imagine an S211 with the 5.0V8 being close to the mythical 'only car you ever need'.

My feeling I would prefer a W124 is not to say I think the S211 is a bad car, in fact as you can probably tell from the above I really like mine a lot!

yes

The (pre '97) 1UZ-FE engine is non-interference too.

VVTi was introduced circa 1997 and provides a very useful upgrade, but also became an 'interference' engine

That's not too bad I suppose, I might have a look at the MCR-1116BT instead, it looks fractionally more modern than the 1016, but as seen below they don't look too modern (this is installed in an 80s Carrera 2).

The agony of choice!

Having had all three, the most underrated has to be the S210.

It still feels like an old-fashioned 'proper' Mercedes like the S124, but has a much higher natural cruising speed, like the S211. It feels long-legged in a way the W124 doesn't share.

S211 is very capable but has lost almost all of the Mercedes je ne sais quoi. It's a nice car, of course, but in basically the same way that the latest Mondeo is a nice car.

£2k??

Just noticed my ex is back on the market. It's a good one, same price, and seemingly a far better example than the one posted, although it's tenure with the new owner was brief.

LS400 is the better car.

I feel the need to wade in on behalf of S211s (and indeed OM642 engines!)!

Mrs Stegel has an 09 E320 CDI, bought at 27 months old on 43k miles and now on 92k (I run a 211 in drag - 219 CLS - 56 plate, bought new and now on 107k miles).

Both cars have had inlet port shut down motors replaced (the 211 needing a new manifold as well, which MB paid 65% or thereabouts towards). Engine wise, between them they have had 3 glow plugs and one glow plug module, but nothing else apart from routine services. Between them, in all that mileage, I doubt I have added 3 litres of oil. The E had a problem with lack of oomph a year or so back, but this was down to clogged turbo (my wife has a light foot and does few long and fast trips) so a bottle of turbo cleaner, half a tank of super-nitro and a good Italian tune up rectified it completely. I changed the exhaust manifolds on the CLS as a precaution as early ones were renowned for breaking up and destroying the turbo.

I'm tempting fate here, and am aware of the issues these engines can have, but both feel as though they will go on for quite a while yet (and indeed, as a result we have totally changed our previous car buying, regular change, habits) without mishap.

On the 211 it feels as solid and robust as it did when first bought, and leads a life involving kids, dog, builders merchant errands and holiday transport burdened down with roof box, kayaks and lots of sand. I'm just over 6'1" and have just checked - with my knees touching the rear bumper, I can stand straight (sagging gas struts perhaps losing some headroom?).

I've never driven an S124, but love driving my A124 - but, lights, mirrors, dynamic ability etc. all mean that on a wet winter day, I'd rather be in a 211 - and if I'm going to get involved in a close encounter with other vehicles on a wintery motorway, I'll take the 211 over a 124, brand new Mondeo etc. as I think that gives me the best chance of walking away unscathed.

I think it's important to view these cars in the context of the competition - I'm no expert on E39s for example, but whenever one is discussed, there is talk of water pumps, swirl flaps etc. The perfect car has never been built - they are all just less than perfect in different ways! ( doesn't the straight six MB 320 diesel weld its glow plugs into the head?).

This is the barge thread, we don't read descriptions wink.

Knock it down a fair bit as its a part exchange they want rid of.
