That nasty mastic underseal lifts off leaving the metal underneath to fester away unnoticed.
It's salvageable - the rear subframe mounts, perches, fronts subframe etc are ok but there are many holes to the inner wings and a nasty hole to each side of the boot floor. Pretty ugly. I've got to decide whether I'm prepared to put the effort and money into getting it fixed properly or cut my losses. Should have kept my E39.
Trouble is, old E39's like to rot as well. I had a 1999 Touring with a hole in the rear sill so large you could get your arm into. It's salvageable - the rear subframe mounts, perches, fronts subframe etc are ok but there are many holes to the inner wings and a nasty hole to each side of the boot floor. A good day yesterday.
After 18 months of casual perusal and soul searching, yesterday I pulled the trigger and bought a Mercedes 190e. It's absolutely beautiful. It looks to be a really nice example, including air conditioning and leather. It's Malachite too, which is a lovely colour.
You can see why Bruno Sacco was so proud of it, it's literally gorgeous from every angle. Last night I must have just stood and looked at it for 15 minutes - noticing things I'd never really seen before.
Anyway, pics when I get around to it. There are a few things to sort over the next few weeks, but I'm really looking forward to it.

I've started a thread to detail progress, but here's a snap from the advert and one of me seeing it for the first time.

I don't see frequent E60 beardage on this thread, but daresay a similar E34/E60 debate could take place along the lines of S124/S211 - and advocates of S210s and E39s sit smugly in the middle (with S210 fans fighting a rearguard action against propensity to rust, contaminated paint systems and rare colours being rust free, and E39 fans arguing that hedgehogs and vanos (I have no idea what these are BTW) are routine maintenance items!).
I'm a bit of a 5-series Touring beard now; for almost all of the last decade my daily car has been one of the four generations (two E34s, one E39, two E60s and one F11). The E39 was probably the least reliable and cost the most to sort out routine maintenance, but is the one I have the fondest memory of. When I bought it to replace the E34 it felt far too modern and comfy, not sporty at all, but in fact I took it for fun drives round Wales pretty regularly; I quickly came to love the way it handled, once I'd got over the differences from the E34.The E60 doesn't have the same inspiring handling as the E39; I wouldn't take mine out just for a drive (though I did try it a few times, and had a great drive in the second back from Knockhill to Edinburgh, following a friend in a Vauxhall XE engined Westfield). Despite that, in the right spec it's an incredibly satisfying car to drive and own. The F11 feels heavier, not as refined (wind and tyre noise aren't as well insulated) but is more fun to drive; it does that shrinking around you thing when you press on down twisty roads through Snowdonia. Reliability seems fine but it's not old enough to get a proper picture.
Anyway, don't write off E60s. They have a few common issues, but I think possibly fewer than the E39. Haven't seen any rusty E60s yet, either.

The other interesting thing was to see how poor the general quality of modern Mercedes paint work is...and I'm sure this is in common with other manufacturers. It was very orange peely. To properly correct this would have required wet sanding the whole car. Whilst I did do quite a bit of wet sanding on the E34 recently to achieve the finish it's not something I fancied doing on someone else's less than a year old £50K car!
The aberration in my parade of 5-series Tourings was a 60-plate C-class estate - that was obsidian black and the paintwork was free from orange peel, looked thicker than BMW paint and seemed far more resistant to scrapes and chips. It made me think BMW really skimp on paintwork. Surprised that your experience was so different; I wonder if the colours vary a lot?Jobbo said:

Agree on Obsidian black - the paint on my wife's E is pretty near perfect straight from the factory, whereas my silver CLS is just OK. BorniteIdentity said:

I was doing the complete reverse - defending the 211 against a bit of a lashing relative to earlier MBs and suggesting parallels with later / earlier BMWs would exist. harrykul said:
