The perfect 2/3 car combination?
Discussion
We did OK with:
Jag XJ, me - nice thing to commute to work in.
VW Sharan, wife - excellently practical way to move people / dogs / stuff about from A to B.
Caterham - toy that lives in heated garage, awoken occasionally for a damn good thrashing.
My commute moved from motorway to b-road, so moved the Jag on and put a Mini Cooper S in its place.

1) 600Bhp 996 turbo, very, very quick, 4wd & still usable as a daily if required
2) 550Bhp supercharged E46 M3, rear drive hooligan car set up for trackdays, but still road useable
3) E39 530d auto Msport, 40mpg and close to 200Bhp, fantastic car to pile mates in for a road trip & deal with commuting.
I'm pretty happy with my selection, but always room for more!

A weekend-only car in a 2 car 'garage' makes no sense at all to about 90% of people. I almost never go out to drive purely for pleasure, as it takes 30 minutes of horrible driving just to get to decent roads! A car that wasn't appropriate for any journey type (town, motorway, long journeys) would never get used.
I think you are extrapolating the London situation too far. If I lived in London, my ideal garage would be an Oyster card - which is one of the reasons I will never live in London. otolith said:
