Current lineup I'm fairly happy with (you always want more though don't you).

Audi S4 B8 Avant
BMW E46 M3
Porsche 911 SC

Quite happy with that for the time being but will probably chop the M3 next for something mental quick.

We did OK with:

Jag XJ, me - nice thing to commute to work in.
VW Sharan, wife - excellently practical way to move people / dogs / stuff about from A to B.
Caterham - toy that lives in heated garage, awoken occasionally for a damn good thrashing.

My commute moved from motorway to b-road, so moved the Jag on and put a Mini Cooper S in its place.

No budget:

RR sport
Boxster GTS (for O/H that I'd 'borrow')
F430

Definitely a dreamer.

I have:

Elise S1 with lots of mods, my sunny week-end car.
Porsche Cayman R, my daily drive.
Fiat Panda 1.2 Dynamic with top notch winter tyres, for days when it's too foul to use the Cayman and for trips to the tip and local shops.

My wife has:

Audi TTS.

Agreed, if the sports car is your daily driver / commuter. If the estate car is for that role, you could compromise less on the sportscar.

1) 600Bhp 996 turbo, very, very quick, 4wd & still usable as a daily if required
2) 550Bhp supercharged E46 M3, rear drive hooligan car set up for trackdays, but still road useable
3) E39 530d auto Msport, 40mpg and close to 200Bhp, fantastic car to pile mates in for a road trip & deal with commuting.

I'm pretty happy with my selection, but always room for more!

A weekend-only car in a 2 car 'garage' makes no sense at all to about 90% of people. I almost never go out to drive purely for pleasure, as it takes 30 minutes of horrible driving just to get to decent roads! A car that wasn't appropriate for any journey type (town, motorway, long journeys) would never get used.

I used to have it fairly well nailed with:

W140 S500L for day to day duties
Atom for fun driving
Classic SL restoration project

Circumstances changed so we now have an SL55 and a W211 e class wagon as well as the classic SL.

I think you are extrapolating the London situation too far. If I lived in London, my ideal garage would be an Oyster card - which is one of the reasons I will never live in London.

I lived in London for a good few years & while yes you wouldn't go for a drive round central London you would gofor a drive the only pain being coming back.

I have always lived within close proximity to great driving roads - Lancashire, Cumbria, mid Wales, Wiltshire. Having to drive through a traffic hell to get to anywhere interesting has zero interest, especially if it means my fun car has to be watered down to be tolerable.
