Teach her how to use throttle/brake and handbrake together and enjoy...

I suspect the car is fine, the problem is with your mothers confidence and/or ability.

My mum is very similar, she won't venture out in anything less than perfect driving conditions as its 'dangerous'. May I be rude enough to ask how old your mum is?

cars do slight in the slightest ice patch, it's ice, that's what it does
winter tyres help but don't change the laws of physics, ice is incredibly slippery

what punto is it ? I had a mk1 punto 1.1 for a little bit, i had been used to driving things which were a lot more substantial.
First time i drove it, it was very wet, went to turn in on a roundabout not even particularly sharply and found myself heading outwards towards the barrier, there was just no front end grip at all, as it had skinny wheels with worn tyres, and very little weight of the front wheels

I also had the Punto Mark one 1.2 Liter Petrol. No problems in winter driving took the little car abroad a few times in the winter.

Make sure the car has plenty of tyre thread above the 1.6 mm.Check the pressures are ok.If you want to spend the money by winter (snow tyres)and wheels.

Just got rid of a 1.2 mk 1 after 15 years of driving in all conditions with no problems. So long as they've got decent tyres on them they'll deal with anything short of a foot of snow.
