What?

The 'every 5 minutes' comments was a general dig at the modern motor industry and their inability to make a coilpack that isn't effectively a consumable part. On the 600s V12 they generally last 60,000 miles plus, which isn't actually a million miles away from the life span on packs you'll find on top of numerous engines in cars you or the average man would consider reliable BMWs?
I suspect that in the 1980/90's had any Toyota engineer specified a coil pack for a LS which generally lasted 60,000 miles they would have been taken out and shot.

Are there any modern (last 15yr) vehicles that don't have a list of issues with at least one potential horror story?
The PH answer to everything, MX5. The MK3 has very few issues, non of them major. Some people have minor rust issues, but nothing like the MK1 and MK2 and avoidable, chocolate anti role bar link's (£180 to replace at dealership prices when they go, so not exactly ruinous.), and early wheels that can go a little tatty. No horror stories, no major issues.
Come again the mk3 has a poor design with the oil pick up pipe due to the engine not meant for the car ie it should be mounted in a fwd car not rwd, this in turns means very little margin for error with oil levels, if its slightly to low will kill the engine pretty quick loads of mk3 around with dead engines, also rust, they rust see pictures of 3 year old mk3 with the suspension in worst condition than my 19 year old mk1.

Mk2 are the one to avoid with rust specially the later 2.5, that's the only known major issue with all mx5 that is rust, hopefully they have sorted the mk4 out its bad for a new car to have very little rust protection in this day and age.

If you do your research you go in with eyes wide open, you need to decide which combination you want. We have 3 and I'm just getting shut of the youngest - Toyota Aygo because it hasn't been anything like as reliable as I would expect, dealers are crap and it has cost me more in a year than the Tuscan. Touareg had one significant bill under warranty for a steering column of all things, otherwise perfect in 3 years. With today's technology even the simplest of cars can go wrong and the old simple ones suffer from old car problems.
But but it's a Toyota!!!!!!
Nope, its just badged as one

Lexus LS400, GS300 or a nice tidy 80 series Landcruiser would be my suggestions for ultimate reliability

From a sample of one (a friend's), which as we all know is statistically significant in the land of Pistonheads, I put forward the Honda HRV

The completely predictable, tedious, boring (and correct) answer will always be 'a Jap car' imho.

Tough thread title, as a visit to any OC/ forum will throw up something that a decent percentage of owners will have to fix at some point.

However, Ive owned 2 mkiv Supras and 2 mk1 MX5s, none of the four cost me a penny in bork over many miles/ years of ownership. Also owned 2 Gen7 Celicas, same story barring the chocolate early 1ZZ engine in my first one (KNOWN ISSUE!!!).

So:

-Lexus RX (bork free 4x4)

-Lexus LS (Matt Farah running a near million-mile example with only $500 expenditure, virtually unanimous agreement that they are bomb-proof)

-Lexus GS (my personal choice for a bork-free DD, 2JZ will survive the apocalypse, I'd still have a 430 with the V8)

-Pretty much any Accord

-Pretty much any Avensis (no thanks)

-mk1 MX5 (mentioned already, but totally unbreakable in my personal experience)

-mk2 Seat Ibiza GTI (a bit of a stretch, but I bought a 150K mile example with MOT for £300 as a track car, used it for this purpose and also as a daily for around 9 months, would not break- probably some common bork though, also: not Jap)

-P38/ L322 (just kidding, but aren't they wonderful when they work?! Also: not Jap)

Yeah. It's probably quicker to pick out the cars they've done that have had issues.
