You Can Only Think About One Thing: Time For Tea?

Another owner talks about his Porsche - man the barricades?

Given the tone and quantity of conversation following the last time we shared a video about a man and his Porsche you'd have to say submitting something on a similar topic as a Time For Tea? is a brave move. But, once again, this is what we have - a passionate Porsche owner talking obsessively about his 911.

This isn't the first time we've met Jack Olsen either. He, his 911 and his fabulous man cave have appeared in this slot once before, courtesy of a Petrolicious video we shared back in 2013. This video, shot to accompany an article in Auto Bild, focuses more on his car, an eccentrically modified 1972 911 complete with Jack's DIY aero kit that he carries in the car and then installs in the paddock for track sessions at Willow Springs, his local circuit. An ongoing 14-year project, the car has evolved into quite a monster with that $80 homebrew aero kit alone accounting for a second and a half of the 30 seconds he's chipped out of his lap time over his ownership of the car. And he's not done yet. Why do it? "I wanna go faster," says Jack with a shrug, managing to avoid saying anything about the asphalt calling.

Has 'Driver X' effectively killed the market for internet videos concerning men talking about their Porsches though? On this evidence we'd argue not and that Jack's humility, focus and the brief snippets of the car in action are enough to restore your faith in the genre. Hopefully.

See here.

Nice film. I really felt empathy when he talked about the pleasure of surrendering yourself to the simple task of driving flat out on a circuit.

4 minutes in suggests he has the right idea, and I love the willingness to fabricate things at home as required.

Although it's easier to keep the same car on track for 14 years when your local one is as open as Willow Springs - beautiful sandpit that it is. I think I would have been through a 911 a year at my local - Cadwell.

You can't knock his patience and devotion. It sounds glorious at full chat and I love the idea that he turns up to the track in normal looking car then simply takes a few bits off, puts a few bits on and goes racing.

Excellent film, humble man with dedication and passion. In marked contrast to the previously submitted film which Dan alludes to.

I think Jack Olsen is a Novel writer by profession so his choice of wording should be better.

Or am I just pretentious in believing I know Jack ? (sorry could not resist)....

Loved it. That engine sounds hard, like it could pick a fight in an empty room, could have done with another ten minutes of it in action.

These old souped up Porsches are just brilliant. But how come they hardly ever pirouette into the scenery at these extreme cornering speeds ?

Please excuse me to continue the obsession a little longer...

After so many people had defended Driver X, citing the photography and Frank's choice of car amongst others, I was beginning to think that maybe I and others had been a little harsh on him and perhaps he should be applauded for his effort. However, seeing this shows that it's not that difficult to make a great, passionate, entertaining and, most importantly, authentic tribute to the car you love.

He's talking about his car — not trying to make out he's an impartial journo; he's driving it with skill and conviction, not like he's on a school run and he's speaking honestly and genuinely about the thing he loves.

Mr Milne you and I are like children playing in the school of pistonheads . We can moan at , tease and even fight each other . That happens in the playground . It's completely normal.
Personally I found the driver x video well shot and that's about it , never have I defended it or frank ( though I love his car and hear from people I trust that he is a proper enthusiast ). That's not the point .

It's not cricket however when a "teacher" jumps in to the fray . That's unsavoury and Mr Trent should know better .

My thoughts exactly. Fair play to the guy for doing what he loves in his spare time with relatively modest budget. I bet the whole set-up has cost less than most people would spend leasing/HPing a shiny new trinket every two or three years which is a lesson for those of us of modest means.

Didn't think I would enjoy that at all - another 'Plonker in a Porsche', but that definitely was worth the cup of tea: top bloke - I'd have a beer with him! smile

I wish I had his money to be able to build and track a car like that on a 'budget'! Joking aside, he comes across as a genuine petrolhead and I'm sure all of us would love to be in his shoes at the weekend with that in your garage and a track like Willow Springs on your doorstep.
