What are people talking about exactly?

It's never been so cheap and easy to own and operate a motor vehicle. I haven't seen a policeman hiding in a bush with a radar gun for about 10 years. I see cars parked with gay abandon on double-yellow lines. Insurance is cheap, fuel is cheap, tax is hilariously cheap or even free!

And yet a colleague of mine was droning on about how the motorist pays for everything in this country and how he can barely afford to drive his car to work because he's got 9 points on his licence and pays £300 a year road tax or something. Idiot.

Seriously what planet are you on? Do you really think that petrol at even the current £5 a gallon is cheap?

You should get your medication renewed.

It's a fking bargain! I can drive from London to Brighton and back for about a tenner. Compare that to what the train costs and then tell me it's expensive.

I assume then that the OP has only been driving a year or so, and drives a 1.0ltr Micra that is uber-economical, because driving is certainly not cheap these days!

Sorry, what is stopping you from driving a micra if you find it expensive? This is exactly my point: if you want or need to make it cheap, you easily can.

Relatively speaking fuel is cheap at the moment. But its still blinking expensive compared to the actual cost of the fuel. I remember when it was 70p a litre!

Car Tax is only cheap if you drive a low Co2 car, its also apparently cheaper pumping black s**t out of a cancer wagon though?!

Insurance is only cheap for oldish gits like me. The young drivers get raped.

So all in all driving is not that cheap, but I agree train fairs are a joke.

PS I'm about go zero tax, zero fuel cost motoring biggrin After this Friday I'll be driving around in a Zoe!

what car has running costs less than 10p per mile?
also isn't there a £10 a day congestion charge that makes that journey for most people £10 before they've even started?

Lack of money to buy a Micra perhaps? What if someone is already driving a 1.0ltr Micra and is finding things expensive? What's you're advice then?

I see where the OP is coming from. I would not say motoring was cheap, but I would say that it was excellent value compared to thr alternatives. I would like fuel to br cheaper, or indeed free, but I don't think it is absurdly priced like a train ticket often is.

Compared to when I started, in 1977, petrol was 75p a gallon, and I earned £16 a week, it is much cheaper now.

I'm with the OP, things are cheap over here. The UK has an amazing choice of cars available for peanuts, it's a petrol heads dream. You're free to do pretty much what you want with your car modification wise. I didn't fully appreciate how good we have it until I moved to Brazil. All the cars were awful (Brazilian made cars are 20 years out of date, ABS has only just become a requirement) and very expensive, imported cars cost a fortune. Fuel cost the same as here, you can't legally modify cars, the roads are awful, etc.

Just look at the road tax rates in Ireland. You pay through the nose to tax a nice car over there. That's an example of how much the government could squeeze us.
