Cornerning lights - anyone else think they are just a little bit daft? I've read some people saying they are really useful, I'm sure it won't belong before they are are declared as a 'must have'. And before those, wasn't the last 'must have' Xenons, before those we had hallogens, etc.

I've just sold a 1997 Audi A4. This had... drum roll... lights. With bulbs. No fogs, Xenons, cornering lights, dynamic systems. Just normal bulbs, the type you bought all those years ago. And amazingly, I never accidentally hit a kerb, or fell into a grate, or mistook a person for a peice of tarmac as I exited a roundabout.

I honestly don't know how I got by on a day to day basis without all this morden light-tech.

You can say the same for winter tyres as well, but having both, I would not want to go back to a car without them. Yes you can drive safely without, but they both make driving so much better. They are not a gimmick, thy actually work well.

IMHO of course wink

What a genuinely bizarre argument! biggrin

So basically if something works we should immediately abandon all efforts to improve on it?

Do you use a Sinclair ZX81? That, after all, worked...

Here here. One reason I haven't changed my 2008 Octavia is that the later ones look like a Christmas tree on wheels. Plus the poncy LEDs cost hundreds to fix, whereas bulbs are a couple of pounds. My 6 year old car has never had a blown bulb so longevity isn't a valid arguement either..

One thing I wondered about them ( and I have no axe to grind about them ) is that is there an exemption under the Vehicle Regs for them as you can use them when it's not foggy? Or are they a separate unit/lens within the fog light?

DRLs on the other hand... Saw a Honda sat in the middle of the road for no obvious reason once (daytime). When I got really close it turned out that the indicator was a strip running just above the blazing DLR. Impossible to see.
Had a near miss in that situation - completely my fault as I couldn't see the indicator was on, and seen quite a few other cars where you need to double-take to work out whether the indicator is on - it's quite hilly round here and if the nose of the car's aiming high you just cannot see some of these indicators over the led euro lamps. Safety advantage having drls? No, not at all imho.
Another one is electronic handbrakes on some cars - the brakelights come on. With the handbrake. That's handy for the driver behind.
The future's so bright I have to wear shades cool

My 25 year old lucida had cornering lights, the front sidelight bulbs were stop and tail, low when sidelights on and high when indicating, nothing new it just took 20 odd years for the EU to catch up and then leave it to manufacturers to implement it in an anoying way laugh

On many cars they come on with every bend in the road regardless of whether or not the driver is indicating. I was in a VW dealer the other day and an old bloke was having to have the lights explained to him having gone in saying his mates had pointed out his foglights were faulty.

My leon has them, very annoying, it's got bendy xenons so not sure why it needs cornering fogs, worse still both come on in reverse..... Strange as it's not the front I want lit up then. I'm getting vcds to code them out after Christmas

Cornering lights, what a complete shower of sh*t!!!

After more than 100 years of automotive progress we have no decided that drivers need a little more light to turn a corner. FFS what on Earth will be next? Before we know it we will have to employ a man/woman to walk ahead of our vehicles and wave a Red Flag to alert others of an oncoming automobile!!!

I have wanted to b*tch about these cornering lights for some time, now the ideal thread permits me to do so. hehe

Totally agree....I've had them on various German metal for last 7yrs.... Never ever seen the benefit.

Mind you, I've also had Xenons since 2002 so concede they may negate the benefit. I'm in the process of choosing a new car now and am gob smacked that they're a cost option on superminis now...Why?!

Well....On my MG midget I have halogen conversion for the 7" round lucas lights and some very effective Cibie Spots. No modern has come close in a long time to matching it for effective lighting round the backroads of Suffolk. Our X-Type estate especially was appalling unless you stopped every 200 yards to manually clean the lights.

But had a C Class coupe on test over the weekend and it has the full blown active bks on the Xenons and it was an utter revelation. On the tightest twistiest sequence of corners I know they were a tad slow to catch up - everywhere else they were simply superb.

Those Xenons are probably HIDsmile Do a nice little dance when they light up. Extremely effective.

My daughters i10 has these cornering lights, I think they are hideous (along with it telling me when it wants me to change gear, and its superbright led drls), she thinks they are fabulous and I'm just an old fuddy duddy.

I have them on the runabout 06 clio. Side of the headlamp lights up when turning. They sound useless but infact they're really good when driving round badly lit side streets when theres cars parked everywhere and risks of people lurking between them ready to step out etc.

Had them on my 2011 Seat company car. Found them no use at all. When sat waiting to turn I'd get the occasional flash from oncoming traffic who thought I was in the fog light brigade.

My Ibiza had them too, having both come on in reverse was especially annoying because the reverse light on the back of the Ibiza is worse than a candle.

Generally didn't bother me when I was driving. Fairly useless, only ever benefited from them once, when turning into my driveway and the streetlamps were off during a power cut.
