Come on, we've all done it. Hold your hand up in the air like you're high 5'ing someone, then open and close your fist for the flashing. I also like to mouth 'lights' at them - as if they'll see me...

The blinking hands sign. Universal sign language, a bit like coffee beans etc

Double blinking hands was the only thing that worked for the idiot that was hammering along the M4 in the rain at dusk with no lights the other day.

My OH administered them perfectly from the passengers seat into the screwed up face of a particularly dim driver while all his passengers lent forward to see what our issue was....

Full retard.
I may be wrong then, I thought it was opening and closing your hand, extending your fingers like a clam shell opening and closing, IYSWIM to replicate a blinking movement.

No wonder I get the middle finger if people think it means coffee beans.

Followed someone for a mile doing all of the above a couple of weeks ago.

Penny finally dropped.

What are people thinking about - if anything?

The other night a woman was behind me at some traffic lights, full stealth mode activated.
After giving her a strobe light show with my brake lights for a good 2 minutes and her too engaged in he conversation with her (pretty fit) passenger I gave up.
The lack of attention some people can pay is impressive sometimes. With people like that it turns into a fk it I hope you don't hit anyone, what else can you do?

The double hand is, obviously, twice as good, but a very hard and potentially dangerous manoeuvre whilst at the wheel. Therefore I usually end up using the single hand flash

Well if you're going to remove both hands from the wheel at all then you might as well give them the 'monkey' and then just blast off into the distance leaving them bewildered with only their own stupidity for company.

How do you tell someone you've overtaken to turn their full beams off? Break checking them seems wrong.

Everyone does 38 around here, so I overtake frequently enough to have it happen. Very annoying.

Since it informs the rest of us how little attention they are paying to what they are doing, might be better not to bother. At least then they stick out and give a bit of a warning.

DRLs - bad design or lack of ability to drive with full focus? Bit of both perhaps.

I try, never works. The roads are straight, so it intrusive for a fair amount of time. fking annoying, although not as much as doing 38 on a flat straight NSL road.

This. Then overtake and point at the front of the car whilst going past, to further torrents of abuse. Then watch with satisfaction as the realisation dawns and the lights go on in your rear view mirrors.
He had his front lights on numpty, as DRL's.....DOH

Surely the solution is two fold. Needs legislation and co operation from manufactures.
1. Rear lights come on with the front DRL's. Many cars now have LED rears so bulbs failing hopefully not a problem.

2. Auto headlights that come on when its dark/ in a tunnel and when wipers are on.

Over a period of time as the old cars are replaced by new this would solve the problem. Is there a downside?

I did blinking hands one once before, it worked! (We were on foot walking down the road) My wife thought I was nuts...

If I'm driving I will flash them like a crazy person, I mean REALLY go to town until they get the message... it works, sometimes takes about 30 seconds, like one dozy bint driving down the motorway in the pitch black parts with no lights on in a black car... friggin dangerous!

I did it once to a guy who then pulled over wound down the window and aggressively shouted something along the lines of "OI Why you flashing me mate?" once I explained the situation he seemed to calm down and give me a thumbs up - some people are unnecessarily hostile!

Driving with no lights in the dark is a real pet hate of mine also.

Followed a black Galaxy along the M4 near Heathrow on Monday around 4.30. No lights whatsoever and barely visible. Honestly, what goes on in a drivers mind when they drive with so little thought?

I've flashed a few. Some you win, some you lose.

Saw 4 vehicles, all without lights, on the opposite carriageway of the M4 last week in a 2 mile stretch in the dark. One of them was a large truck.

Yes.

Less thinking on behalf of the individual, which is precisely the problem in the first place. We can't just legislate away stupidity.

Now euthanasia on the other hand....

I must admit that I did this on several occasions when I first got my 14 plate fiesta van.

Off possession for the light switch is headlights on, rears off.

Middle position is front sidelights on only, rears on.

Third (and in low spec, final) poistion puts headlights and rears on.

Apart from the middle setting seeming rather pointless, another annoying problem is that the clocks are constantly illuminated regardless. And with the headlights on when the switch is in the off position it's very easy to leave lights off as its easy to see in a built up area. Annoyingly the car also bongs at you if you leave the switch on when you exit, despite turning the headlights off when lockes. This, to someone used to older cars means it's likely you'll return the switch to the off position.
