A spare wheel costs extra?
Most VAG cars come with a can of foam now, a space saver is optional.

Imagine being a designer for VAG.

The brief for the Skoda must be....."Make sure it's uglier than the Audi and VW equivalent.

This report didn't comment negatively on the ride, all other reports I've read say that the ride is now crippling, which is a shame as the older VRS' had really good real world pace due to the supple ride quality. Anyway a good car, but if it were my cash, I think I would take the Focus ST estate instead. From what I've read its just a more engaging car and equally practical......

Certainly makes a change from the sea of VW Golfs out there.
An aesthetic change, maybe.
Agreed. Skoda's always seemed to by the VW's fat ugly sister, but its the other way round for me with the latest Fabia and Octavia models

Dunno, but I don't tow so it wouldn't bother me!

Anyway, a quick scan of Auto-trader found a nice 63 reg ST estate in blue for £17,500, 7 grand less than the price of a new VRS so as I am not a fan of brand new cars, that would do me nicely!

You could certainly tow with the mk2, in both estate and hatch form. I often use ours to tow our unbraked 750kg trailer but I wouldn't want to pull anything much heavier, the Octavia isn't really heavy enough to tow big braked trailers. I think the limit is something like 1300kg, but I wouldn't want to try that for any distance.

I purchased a 1 year old Vrs diesel estate in 2009, for 13k. Still have it, great workhorse & great value then.
But I wouldn't spend 24k on a new one.
I'd rather buy a far superior 1 year old 5 series BMW for that !!

Hefty discounts are available on Octavias if you're willing to go via a broker and wait a month or two. My father recently saved thousands (compared to his local dealer) on a highly specced 1.8TSI version in L&K trim with the DSG gearbox.

Some aspects of the looks are a bit so so, but the driving experience is very good indeed. The 180bhp 1.8 feels like plenty most of the time, and the build quality is very pleasing indeed based on the 500 miles or so I had in it. The interior feels very spacious indeed. Ride quality was great.

These fast Skodas never really appealed much to me, what's wrong with SEATs for a cheap alternative? The Leon looks very good whereas this Octavia looks like an old Passat with some new LEDs

Ah, bri-skoda, I used to go on there a lot. After months of topics and posts such as

“I revved my car to 4,000 rpm when cold will it be ok”
“ive changed my badges lets seen another 500 vrs like that”
“winter tyres are a must for urban london”
“is it ok to use independent garage instead of skoda”
“I only use skoda trained mechanics”
“I drive a st box tdi 1.6 taxi and think its quick”
“why would you turn the TC off”

I gave up. Handy for problems though.
Sounds about right to me!

A quick scan will also show a year old vrs estate for the same money.

These cars are great all rounders, just really annoys me that they made the current one too big! The Mk2 was a good size and had a massive boot and very accommodating boot capacity. There was no need to increase the size further, it just makes the car look gawky, more difficult to park and more likely to get damaged. Added to this are stupidly unnecessary pointless things like lane keep assistance. Plus the price has increased such that they will cost larger amounts in depreciation.
They will be a great buy if Skoda ever offer them on VAT free though and there aren't many cars that offer the levels of fuss free performance combined with the practicality, especially with the Estate version. Can't help thinking there would be a market for a more extreme version too

The big 3.6litre Superb didn't do well , pretty sure the Vrs models only really do well in the UK less of an appetite for them in the rest of Europe

Ah fair enough. smile

I can't imagine they've changed it. They seem pretty popular as tow cars.

ETA: In fact according to Parkers, the maximum braked towing weight is 1800kg on the new one.

I'm sure the likes of Citroen could've found a way to give it a personality injection (and no; I don't mean electrical faults and brittle trim wink ). Actually, the fact that it's a turbo 4-pot and FWD doesn't automatically mean it has to be bland - our Mini JCW certainly has character, as does something like an Astra VXR. It's just that this Octavia seems so...prescribed. That seems to be the VAG way though.
I've tried to like my VAG TDI for years but I've finally admitted it's dull and has horrible body control. VAG make some good cars, and some bad ones. However they aren't the only company that make dull cars, although sometimes on here it feels like they are! I like the smaller and cheaper cars you don't expect to be good. The cars you feel connected to but never uncomfortable in, is I think what most drivers want.
I'd like to drive a Mini JCW. smile
