Many years back a young kiddie ran out from behind the back of a bus, nothing I could do to avoid my vehicle hitting the child. Like slow motion I saw the impact arriving, swerved to the nearside whilst braking hard of course. The off side of the vehicle, a transit van, hit the child and she flew into the air coming down in the middle of the road. For a few moments I froze, then got out and approached this little rag doll in the middle of the road, blood coming from her head.
Emergency services arrived and carried out their work. Police apparently interviewed a number of witnesses who were standing at a bus stop my side of the road. They confirmed I was driving at likely less than 30mph in a 30mph limit and nothing could have been done to avoid the accident.
It was later confirmed the child had a fractured skull, bruising and abrasions, if my speed had been a little higher it is likely the child would have been killed.

I used to love speed as much as most people, but prefer to practice that on track days, least I did I have since packed it in. Sorry if I'm preaching but there it is.
sad story, but we are not taking about speeding in built up areas or 30mph zones.

Fear of being caught and the lingering memory of a 6 month ban make me pretty weary of going anywhere instant ban territory on a motorway \ any national speed limit road.

However, saying that and I totally get the statement regarding cars easily capable of twice the speed limit the problem is other drivers. For every attentive, courteous one there's 132,000 that can't be arsed to use the left lane, indicators, mirrors etc.

It still amazes me that Motorway driving or high speed skills are not part of the driving curriculum.

Well it also appears that he wasn't speeding at all.

Fair enough, sorry I didn't read into that. I agree that 70mph on motorways seems slow what with the tech' now incorporated into new cars and high safety impact standards. Still have to say that excessive speed is not really much of a time saver but so tempting on a empty motorway. Things going wrong put me off excessive high speed though, punctures, mechanical breakages and daft things like a dog appearing in front of you from nowhere, or an illegal immigrant falling off the underside of a lorry your about to blast past.

Lots of people talking about speeding on the motorway. My motorway driving is quite sensible; there's no fun to be had, and going faster just causes frustration as you are constantly catching up with morons. No, I'm more worried about 'A' and 'B' roads, my concerns often being more towards crashing than being caught. I have 't crashed yet touch wood, but that's what keeps me from absolutely wringing it out.

there is still a level of satisfaction when dropping the sales rep in his white audi that has been swapping paint with your rear when the traffic clears in front of you.

for me anyway smile

Yeah, I don't get that. Then again I've never had more than 190bhp so accelerating from 70 some four pot diesel rep mobile would probably be just as quick if not quicker...

The state of the roads. In the 13 years I've been driving/riding they seem to of gotten into a far worse state. Far too many potholes to be excessively speeding. Plus all the formerly nsl roads round here now are a constant up and down the speed limit range seemingly every mile. No doubt the penalty for getting caught would be far higher than when they were deemed nsl. Shame really as 90% of the time there was no need to change them.

I just like to take it easy. Why does this poll assume that we all want to be going fast, but feel we can't for some reason?
with a 2001 316i i would imagine there isn't many options other than taking it easy. smile
I should update that.

over 750 responses to a poll - thats a PH record isn't it?

we had an 'incident' christmas day. FIL had a suspected stroke in cambridge - we were in Romford. We arrived at the hospital in Cambridge before the air ambulance had returned with him.

Thankfully it was a seizure, so no lasting damage. took a day for the speech to return which was quite scary.

But just shows you what empty roads and the right motivation can do to journey times.
I reckon I could do it quicker in a leased Golf R.

I got a call to say my Dad had been rushed into Hospital as he'd had a stroke, never suffered brake failure due to fade before or since, my classic Scooby went like stink but the brakes didn't match up to it! They were upgraded shortly afterwards strangely enough.
