Nissan Juke NISMO RS launched

Six-speed manual, limited-slip diff, 218hp and £22K; the oddball hot hatch gains some credibility!

We all know why the Nissan Juke NISMO RS is more important to hot hatch fans than simply the sum of its parts. It is quite closely related to the Renaultsport Clio and, well, that's hardly set the hot hatch world alight. If the Juke can be enhanced then it must be possible with the Clio too, right?

Nissan releasing few images. Funny that
As a quick reminder, the main changes for the RS Juke are more power and torque, bigger brakes, retuned springs and dampers plus a mechanical limited-slip differential. Interestingly, the two-wheel drive Juke has a six-speed manual gearbox whereas the four-wheel driven model gets the Xtronic auto and less torque. Surely a Renaultsport Clio with a manual and the diff can't be too hard?

The NISMO RS is on sale now from £21,995, actually a fairly modest jump from the £20,500 the Juke NISMO used to cost. Used to? Yes, the RS has replaced the regular NISMO in the Juke range. So come on Renaultsport; take the initiative, replace the existing car with an RS220 Clio and we'll forget all about this little blip.

£1500 for bigger breaks more power, upgraded suspension and an LSD

an absolute no brainer.

I was quite keen on one of these (I actually like the look of them!) but I wanted 4wd. Sadly, that meant an auto, so it was a no-goer for me.

It may handle well and this hot hatch version may well be a hoot but it doesn't change my mind on the ugliness factor. It's always looked to me like a few different car designs all crashed into one another and they slightly smoothed the rough edges where they did to make the Juke.

+1 Looks are obviously a subjective thing, but really it is just wilfully ugly.

Different, yes, attractive no.

What do I know, the damn things are everywhere.

But as for added credibility, I don't think you would have much even against say the much derided Cio RS...

If was a twin clutch (out of the Clio) I would actually have been tempted but its still the silly CVT.

My thoughts exactly. I'm not averse to some form of auto, just not 'pensioner spec' please.

Still ugly. Still pointless. Still just a runabout small SUV. Not even a hatch, let alone a hot one.

Mrs Targ loves Jukes, especially the newer model in Yellow. I'd rather she got a Quashqai but if she chooses a Juke next I'm fine with it. Yes the looks are interesting, but its not ugly like a Multipla. Notice how many you see on the roads? Nearly always driven by women, says it all. I think there is something about cars with 'haunches' women like - she likes the new Scirocco - I can't see the point in it (she had a MKV Golf GTi at the time - same car without a frock on).

I prefer Shermans playing 'oh for the love of Sunshine' 'Monkey' or 'Matt' which ever it is, and you hit the nail on the head when you mentioned 'Blob' come on look at it again! Dog st is 'different' and has its place but I don't want that on my drive either, its in the same league, again why?

I've noticed some owners of the outgoing Nismo take themselves quite seriously; they think they own mini GTRs!

I can see the appeal though. It looks pretty cool, and has the obligatory of-the-moment 'menacing' colour scheme to catch people's eye. For just over £20k, it's pretty accessible for Average Joe looking for something to enhance their ego whilst still being able to ferry the nippers.

My FIL has the outgoing Juke Nismo, 4wd auto - It is a cracking car - Looks are subjective, but it goes well and rides nice... Crap on fuel though! His WRX Scooby Prodrive is not far behind it!

Would definitely have one. One of the most fun cars I've driven for ages when I rented one recently and as expected, the rental being a diseasel was gasping for more power and it would have been an absolute joy on a B road.

Yes.

Those looks could be fixed by choosing a different colour and different wheel/tyre package I think, the wheels need a deeper dish in them to match the muscle of the body work. Maybe roll the guards slightly. Job done.

Wow. What a disgusting heap of junk. That's just my personal opinion though....

When a car has "NISMO RS" written after its name you'd expect it to have some decent performance to match the hype.

6.8s to 60mph in 2WD form isn't terrible (7.7s to 60mph in AWD form is terrible though!), but you'd expect more with that name.

To me it's a pretty hateful lump of machinery! Truly ugly and waters down the Nismo brand image.

To me it's just an overweight 1.6 Micra with a sticker on the back.

Did I mention I didn't like it?!

Funny how the article contains the words "Clio RS220" and no one on PH raves about it. Shows just how much disappointment the new car generated...

Yes it should be more dakar and less raised-hot-hatch, but it's pretty cool. I think the Juke is a great thing - people call it ugly, but I'd much rather have ugly than bland, and bland is exactly what the fiesta/clio/corsa/whatever bring to the table; inoffensive looking cars that are then lowered, bodykitted and winged to look "sporty" or "aggressive" (why?!).

Long may Nissan's success continue - I can't understand why anyone would buy a bland car when they could have something that is, at the very least, trying.

IMHO the FIAT Multipla is a thing of beauty compared to the Juke. Looks like it was designed by a committee.

I do understand the ugly thing. When I got rid of the last Subaru I didn't want a car that was the same as all the other cars in the car park. So while I was waiting for Subaru to build something I actually wanted I got a Juke Nismo. Without the LSD that you get with the RS it is hopeless, since 220 bhp through the fronts overwhelms the tyres (mine is tweaked). The ContiSport 5's last 5000 miles, I've swapped them front to back and they are all shot at 12k miles.

But I think it does look marginally less ugly from some angles. This is mine:

18's look too small. Headlights are like candles.

Still looking for something to replace my Scoobs.
