Its amazing how the extra engine size only puts out an extra 60bhp or so !
Those modular V8's can actually make a LOT of power if they're tuned up for it, but normally were just built to tick over moving big heavy american barges very slowly in straight lines for several hundred years. Rover (I think it was actually contracted to prodrive?) did a bit of a job on that one, as I think the base 4.6 only made about 240hp. The 4valve from the SVT cobra was making something around 320, and Marcos had them at around 330 iirc - and that's before one starts messing around with forced induction. This is more or less the same engine that's in the Ford GT where it makes, what, 560 odd with a bigass supercharger strapped to it?

It also goes to show that that KV6 was actually a pretty good engine. The BMW M54 six you'd find in a 525 from that era makes the same 190 horses at 2.5 litres and no one ever called that under powered for it's displacement.

For all their faults, good examples of these are probably decent value at shed money. Not really my cup of tea, but I can understand why they appeal to many people. The KV6 motor seemed to have a mixed reputation and would put me off.

One other thing, it always looks like the panel gaps on these cars are fairly big, especially where the bonnet and wings meet the nose/grille assembly. Makes me worry about build quality. This shed is a 6 out 10 for me.

Have always liked these. Not sure why.
Maybe it's because they were in GTA London?
The Getaway, what a game hehe
Thought it was a 1999 Rover 75? nerd

"MG Rover's top of the range car. This is sometimes mistaken for a Jaguar, by the less informed. It's a long car, looks sophisticated but despite having a large engine, it offers only a few thrills. The acceleration and top speed are as you'd expect - quite good, but you can usually half-inch a better motor than this."

There was a 'Raver' in Grand Theft Auto: London. Based on the Rover P4...
The 75 was also in the Getaway: Black Monday (with slightly better graphics).

Every so often I quite seriously look at getting a ZT190. A lot of car for the money, and can still look quite smart.
Both the 75 and the ZT were in the game.

I'm going to have to say it.

This was Rover past their prime, trying to be like Jaguar. So quad headlights and those unreadable clocks.

Better is the Rover 600 ti turbo which was at least something trying to be honest and quite a Q car to boot. And you could read how fast you were going on the speedo.
The 600 wasn't better, the handling was nowhere near as good, it wasnt built as well, the interior wasnt as nice, they rusted for fun and folded in a crash, the 600Ti wasnt massively faster than a ZT 190, half a second to 60 and I would suspect that you could easily make that up in the corners.

The 75/ZT was a far superior car being from ten years later, finding a 600 of any type will be difficult, ZT's and 75's are dwindling fast as well.

Drove a friends 190 a few times and thought it went, steered and sounded pretty good. Performance to fuel economy was a bit poor but my biggest gripe was it was a bit 'tight'. Very little interior room for the size of the car.

Felt like I was sat on top of the dashboard.

Have to say a few times recently when somebody has asked me for a recommendation for a cheap reliable load lugger ive pointed them towards a ZT-T.

This is one of those cars i always looked at and considered when i saw one in the right colour however this ended after riding in a friends V6 was quite disappointed at how it went. Made all the right noises but a quick glance at the speedo showed it wasn't as fast as the pipes suggested. The build quality is a bit mist mash and not the oct comfortable seating either. I suppose for those that want to waft the rover 75 is a better choice.

It's funny that. The 'sensation' of speed is often something that's missing from cars nowadays that are said to be too insulated etc from the road.

Drove a few ZTs in my time and concur with a lot of the comments here. Lovely noise, great ride/handling mix and decent interior.....

I had a ZT 160+. Lovely car. Only got rid because my commuting distance reduced drastically and I fancied an Impreza Type-R.

Slightly o/t but here's a pic of the stillborn and rather nice Peter Stevens-designed Coupe Prototype built for Rover’s 100th anniversary in 2004. The MG TF coupé was unveiled at the same time.

That is lovel, I liek the interior apart from the hideous sterring wheel, always thought the 800 Coupe was a looker and this is better, shame it never made it to market.

The coupe concept was lovely, as was the TF coupe concept.

It's a bit sad really. I think it's fair to say that no-one could reasonably argue that MGR as a company deserved to survive, but they had some very talented designers and engineers who could have produced some very viable cars had the company been capable of supporting them.

I'm intrigued to have a go in a ZT at some point.

I had a Rover 75 as a shed a while back. It was the least sporting car I've ever driven by some margin. But, underneath the syrupy suspension and the glacial steering response was the makings of a good driver's car. It felt well balanced and there was a real proportionality between your inputs and its actions. I can see how some stiffer springs and dampers, a quicker rack and a decent engine (mine was the base spec diesel...) would turn it into quite a satisfying steer.

Obviously, rear-wheel drive and a hefty V8 would do the job even better, but if people are worried about KV6 fuel economy (which wasn't actually that bad on my ZS) then I suspect a Mustang engine would be out of bounds!

Always loved the look of this, and it's a real shame it never got produced because I would have bought one. I could just never really bring myself to like the standard 75's lines.

more than a hint of Bentley Continental about that!!

The MG ZT is a good shed, it may share some components with far far older machinery but by all accounts the MG engineers did a fairly good job of making something substantially more appealing than the original Rover 75.
