Very expensive to run, even when theyre running correctly! Hence why they are so cheap to buy

I've heard someone was trying to flog a VW Camper for £80,000 at the ExCel Classic Car show this weekend... rolleyes
The VW spitty market has gone batst crazy in recent months. Wish I had racked up a few on the drive when I had the chance. frown
Months? Years more like. A few have changed hands for 6 figures! When I got in to VW's nobody wanted them and a couple of thousand got you a tidy one. They're hateful things to drive, I've never seen the appeal myself
I was specific about the 'batst' part - the market has trended upwards for a long time now, but some of the recent activity has been nuts. Most obvious example being the Split that was sold recently for c.$302k!! Nothing special either - just a TV resto-mod.

Edit: https://www.barrett-jackson.com/Events/Event/Detai...

Not going to agree with the 'hateful things' bit, but I will say that the gulf of difference between good and bad is HUGE. Some are "hateful" and some are really good.

This one sold for $217k back in 2011

I've got a friend in Germany that has been charging 6 figure sums for Samba restos and stuffing 911 engines in the back of standard buses for a few years now.

I stand by the hateful to drive comment too biggrin

Ah but that's a 23-window...price goes up with the window count. wink

Regardless, having viewed a few auctions recently, I do think that this cannot go on forever. When a bloody green Focus RS is a £41k car...well, I think a bursting of the bubble cannot be far away.

Not the most exotic, but looks ridiculous to me for an 8 year old Mondeo in a suit, especially with those seats...

No idea if $300k is a lot for a splitty, but calling that 'nothing special' and 'just a TV resto-mod' is miles wide of the mark. That particular one is a Kindigit car (the splitty restoration was on their current TV series a month or 2 back)... the cars they turn out are astonishingly well done... attention to detail on fit and finish is just stunning.

"Nothing special" = nice car and special enough, but not limited production numbers, not 'most windows', not particularly early model, no provenance (that I'm aware of beyond the TV appearance), not 100% original and so on. As good as it may be, it's still just a fine resto-mod and nothing more. All my humble opinion of course, but there is no 65 21-window on earth that is good enough to warrant £250,000 of my money.

Look at the classifieds here and you will see what I mean.

In fact, look at this: http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/v...

A 50's 23-window for £40k. You could spend £100k having every single nut and bold licked into place by angels and STILL have £110k in your sky rocket to do the same thing all over again. (To quantify - 'licked into place by angels' is akin to 'send to Spikes Vintage Resto' shop)

All IMHO, but you will hopefully see why I class the bhin' Rides bus as overpriced and nothing special - i.e. special in itself, but not as to command such a premium.

Not as overpriced as some others, but £7000 for a 16 year old 3 series convertible. Looking at similar age / mileage it looks like it should be £2500 - £3000, no clue in the advert about why it's so expensive.

Why on earth does a main dealer want that?!

Might help if it had been properly cleaned before photos were done.

They've probably overpaid on PX so are trying to make on a retail sale to recoup some loss.

Pass me the tyre gel!!

That is an odd one though. Potentially an incorrectly entered price? Surely? M54B22 engine is not the one to have, so can't even blame that.

Who am I to say this is seriously over priced, but in my opinion it is!

Yes, it is very low mileage, with good history, but I just don't think it is that special...

I'm sure I remember it being for sale a couple of years ago for around £10k, and I thought it was expensive then, so £37k now is incredible!

6k for a C6 RS6 is a bit of an insult though really, it would have to be an absolute dog to be worth 10k, let alone 6.
Are you sure you don't mean C5?
My mistake. C5 (V8)

I borrowed one a few years to clean/take to a local VW/Audi show. petrol light was on when I picked it up, thought i'd stick a tenner in it as was only a few miles away. petrol light was still on after putting petrol in! smile

always thought they'd be an expensive car to run long term.

I don't think that means much - I had a C6 A6 2.0tdi and £10 wouldn't register in the fuel gauge on that!

Just looked at the photos again and they've changed! They've added the tyre gel I mentioned! Maybe they are on here...

Last weekend at Brookland's saw a couple of eye-openers. A 970cc Cooper S at £57,000? More "realistically" a running doggy "barn find" E-type at a mere £147,000 and a 1954 XK120, LHD/RHD conversion for from memory around £130,000. I guess these can't be considered overpriced because someone paid that, but I have a great deal of trouble accepting it.

This gem turned up in my Gumtree feed, i think with 170k and the state of it, it may just be a tad over optimistically priced hehe
