The problem is that modern cars can shrug off neglect quite well. But anything over 30 years old really needs tlc. I still remember the first time I tried a classic mini. About 12 years ago, I offered to park it,as there was no spaces available when a friend brought it round one Christmas. Only drove it 100 metres or so. The brakes were so ineffective I was genuinely afraid. The car was a drums all round model but my friend assured me they were in tip top shape and had only recently been checked all over ready for its Mot. His weekly checklist on the car was very extensive. Quite put me to shame.
I think we expect older cars to perform badly, to be fair the brakes on a Mini, even on drums weren't that bad, they would pull the car up pretty smartly when working correctly, but they did tend to end up badly maintained, I bought one and when I braked hard the wheels on one side locked and span the car.

My wife had an old Fiat, I drove it and it stopped but it was pulling badly to the left, I asked her and she said the brakes werent great but they did the job, I took it apart and the left front slave cylinder was leaking badly, fluid all over the brakes shoes, got a new one for 15 quid, replaced all the shoes for the spare ones we had, bled the brakes and the brakes were great, not like a modern but plenty capable of pulling up a 500 kilo car, she was amazed how much better they are.

Think the problem is people dont care and they either dont notice the degradation in performance or ignore it as it is all a bit complicated, might cost time and money.

I think that there should be perhaps more consequence for drivers for not maintaining cars, i.e. being pulled for lights being out and getting a producer, I see the same cars day in day out with only one functioning headlamp, in other countries, drivers have to carry a spare set of bulbs, I have more lights on my push bike than the average Pug 206 does ffs.

Like the "Muggles" thing RLY.

I read. I read a lot. However, I am aware that in my time remaining on this planet there are only a finite number of books I can possibly read. Popular or not, I have no desire to read a children's book about the exploits of some ttty boy-wizard. I also don't read Dan Brown. Is that ok with you?

"Is" and "you're"

Sounds like you should read more often, although i'd recommend sticking to kiddies books.

I think many people's view is that cars only need to be maintained once a year for the MOT. Probably because they are very unlikely to get pulled for anything until then.

I had never heard of muggle either. With you on the Harry Potter disinterest.

Yes Zoobeef, I do refuse to read or watch that cack.

I think one would have to be living on another planet to not be aware of Harry Potter. In fact I live quite close to Alnwick Castle where much of it was filmed IIRC. However I don't claim to have an encyclopaedic knowledge of the 'lingo'.

Someone piss in your cornflakes this morning?

It's a made up term used for nothing else yet has now been used or mentioned in many tv shows, papers, news and you have never heard it? Do you not leave the house?
Just pointing out the way people pretend to know absolutely nothing about something so they can go round saying it's crap and they've never seen it. It's probably been used on the front page at some point of all newspapers but you never thought then, I wonder what that means?

Or you do know, yes you may not have read the books, but saw this thread and thought, I know, I'll ask what muggles are. That'll make them all impressed that I've avoided everything for the last 17 years.

Edit: Even now an advert has just been on for the Inbetweeners 2 movie out on DVD.
First words on the advert- "greetings muggles"
But you've never heard it.

On topic;

I was once asked by a young lad if I could help push his Polo away from the kerb. I helped but asked why we were pushing it. "I can't get reverse." he said. Fair enough...

More recently, I was driving along a SC NSL road and came up behind a girl in an E36 BMW. Over the next mile or so I became aware of a high pitched screech. I immedialtly turned off my stereo and started listening out for it and using the usual rolling diagnostics to work out where it was coming from. (My car was older than the E36 so I thought it may have been me).

It took a couple of moments to realise the noise I'd heard over my stereo was coming from her car. She didn't seem to have noticed it let alone be interested in what it could have been. Maybe her stereo was louder than mine!

No, but I don't spend much time in the UK. Maybe that's it. Or maybe I just wanted to impress some men on the internet with my lack of knowledge of a children's book.

Are you J K Rowling? You seem to be taking this very personally?

Not really an excuse. It's the same as Clarkson pretending he's mechanically inept.

Tbh I do find it odd you've never heard that term. I've never seen a Potter film or read a Potter book but even I have heard of it. Personally I think you are trolling or have lived a life away from any media outlet for the last 17 years. Bravo!

as above

also it;s better than the use of 'civvies' to refer to those not in a.n.other random set of knowledge , unless of course you are Military and are genuinely referring to civilians.
