Having seen a few threads recently asking what makes the ideal road car etc, I sat down the other day and thought to myself, what exactly do I want out of my next car? This is in the vain hope that it will help narrow down the next vehicle to grace my driveway. So, here goes;

It needs to be-
  • relatively small
  • reasonable sized boot (needs to swallow a fair amount of photography kit)
  • three seat belts in the back
  • reasonable performance to economy balance. (175bhp> & 30mpg+)
  • Good handling (occasional track use is probable)
  • Decent ride
Less imperative, but still may swing the deal-
  • Decent sound system with good connectivity
  • Semi-auto (lots of town driving)
  • 5 door
  • Decent motorway dynamics (years of Honda ownership and this is one of its biggest gripes, it just wouldn't shut up)
So what are yours?

Daily Driver:
Not too big
Automatic
FWD (possibly 4WD)
High ground clearance
Large(ish) boot
Hatchback with wash/wipe
Comfy ride
Climate control
Small(ish) wheels (say 16")
Preferably petrol

Weekend Toy:
V8 petrol
RWD
Good handling
Quick steering rack
Figure hugging "sports" seats
Convertible

And in both cases, no built in sat-nav, electric seats or other superfluous heavy gizmos that I'll not use and will cost a fortune to fix if/when they break.

AWD (proper not Toy Town)
Ground clearance
Decent bit of luxury and refinement
Room for 5
Boot space for family holiday and dog
Ability to tow 3000kg
Poke
Mid 20's MPG, anything over is a bonus

Android connectivity/integration would be nice but not essential

So another RR then smile

Character
Good visibility
Five seats
Five doors
Towing capability
Genuine all-weather capability
Large luggage capacity
Look good with a few dents and scrapes
Can use the roof as a viewing platform

That about covers it. Defender 110 Station Wagon it is. Or am I putting the cart before the horse here...?

I don't plan to buy another family car... the Land Rover's are keepers for life.

However in the future I do plan to aquire some sort of sports car.

Might end up building a Lotus 7 type copy with LS power.

I have serious v8 withdrawal symptoms.
Id like a GS430.
But it would have to be a second car.
My Excel is not going anywhere for the time being.

Daily - Quick-ish auto diesel hatchback with adaptive cruise. Boring but necessary for doing big miles. Likely either a 125d or new GTD!

Weekend Toy - Could be a few months/ a year or two away but I really want something RWD and minimum 6-cylinders

+1 although occasional room for 7 would be nice and I cannot bear the chavvy white leather most FF RangeRovers seem to come with. Make mine a Discovery smile

Large boot - estate probably (3 kids plus associated paraphernalia)
Nice interior
Good audio setup
Needs to still be fun so 300bhp ish
Will be used so it has to have been maintained properly prior to my buying.
Not too bothered about mpg
Really want (need) a V8 in my life

looks good - coupe most likely
RWD
petrol
more power than my current car (so, 300bhp+)
quicker than my current car (0-60 in less than 5.9)
comfy place to sit
aircon, leather, cruise control, aux input on the radio.

ideally more economical than my current car (28mpg on a motorway cruise)

newer, and with fewer miles.

so, pretty much a BMW 335i coupe then!
