I have been using a car cover for a while and got a bit tired of taking it off and putting it on so i built a carport to the front of my garage.

Just recieved a letter from local council saying that it was in breach of planning laws . I looked at planning portal and couldnt find any breach.

I have wrote back stating that. The carport is basically 4 wooden posts with a corrugated plastic roof on it. 3M x 6M.

If i have to take it down do you think i would be able to replace it with a popup gazeebo or portable garage which is basically a tent like construction ??? im not sure wether tents can be in contravention of local planning laws.

Anyone had any experience with this before ?

Check the rules on permitted development

... but if the Council has already told you to take it down, then you're almost certainly in breach of them.

Do you live in a conservation area or national park?

Is it all behind the front wall line of the house?

http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/permission/common... gives the basics for why it might be outside permitted development, but I suspect those two are the most likely.

If it really is just four poles plus plastic sheeting, then I wonder if it might be Building Control who are getting exercised, not planning.

A temporary cover, like a pop-up or portable garage, would definitely be outside either BC or planning.

I can't say I'm on your side sadly - looks an eyesore.

Well done planners.

Ps, could you not extend out back?

I read the title as "...take down a carpet",

as you were,
Jet

P.S. I have it mind (as in bloke down the pub's mind) that <30 sqm and open on >=2 sides and no P.P. required

No.

Contrary to the ill-informed opinion above, there is a definition of a 'temporary' structure under Planning law and it's quite strict: it basically applies only to buildings which will remain in position for less than 28 days in any 6 month period.

Well to be fair if you where my neighbour I would discuss it first and if no agreement then I would remove it on your behalf lol
Seriously can you not go out the back of the garage as suggested, plus it keeps the ride off the main road out of prying eyes.

Hell's bells, that's a hideous structure. Registration plate qualifies for here too:

Permitted Development : No
Likelihood of getting Planning Consent : None
Would a Council issue an Enforcement Notice for this : Very Likely

Take it down

Ok so are you saying that portable garages are not allowed ? is it just that those who have them on there drives are just lucky or unoticed by planning authority

yes The carport he's built over it looks a bit amateurish, too.

Have a chat with the folk that sent you the letter about what you can / cannot do, OP.

The fact that your carport brings the building line of your property and those around you forward will have stuck you on their radar. Look at the planning portal, as already recommended and it will tell you what you can do with / without permission.

Off topic, I don't think an F40 and a nice pair or curtains would enhance your carport.

Sorry.
