Mk 2 RS 1800 BDA Escort heard approaching you on a forest rally stage. Nothing else roadworthy comes remotely close.
I`m with you there,first thing I thought of,www.youtube.com/watch?v=ER90Oxgiv7E
Or this unholy noise

Without the need for carbon air boxes, ITBs and exotic engines I have a nostalgic attraction to common or garden inline fours on Weber DCOEs running open trumpets.
In my younger days I had an Alfa 1750GT. I really miss the sound of those Webers - pity about the rust, thoughm4tti said:

About 30 years ago I owned a Sunbeam Alpine and fitted a Holbay engine. At about 2,500 to 3000 rpm , just before it came on cam , each induction stroke sounded like an anvil being hit with a hammer . It was an incredible sound that I have only heard once since but have never been able to recreate .
Had exact same car & set up. Lovely bark! I think the CSL intake noise is just wrong in that type of car (as are the uncomfortable seats) fine in a weekend toy but a CSL isn't fun enough (compared to a Caterfield etc) IMO.
I can't think of any non supercars that sound remotely good from the last 30 years with the exception of TVR, all the others need aftermarket help and then it's a case of luck in combining the right parts rather than the car itself.
I had a Jap MX5 with an aftermarket carbon intake that connected straight to the TB and it sounded far better than the exhaust (admittedly not that hard on a 4 cylinder)
However a V8 or V12 exhaust can sound superb - but I admit sometimes those you pass hear it better than the driver does.
All V12 Mercedes ought to sound like this:

Nothing can compete with a mid-engined car when it comes to noise and drama. I loved my MR2 Turbo for the cacophony of noise it made. A roaring intake noise and whistling turbo right behind your ears made for some entertainment. I was out in a friend's new Boxster S the other day. Wow, what a noise that made! Snarling, crisp intake noise and pops and crackles from the exhaust, all accentuated by the PDK transmission firing out the changes. The MR2 was nice, but the Boxster was just on another level.

Missing screw Just knew it wouldn't go unmentioned!
I did enjoy the induction noise on my V8 M3 though...but not much else!
