Intake vs exhaust noise, what car has best intake sound?
Discussion
Four years in and I still can't get enough of the noise of my E46 CSL. Dry, deserted roads early in the morning, windows down, gearbox thumping and banging, engine revving to the heavens and continuously changing tone and volume, as it's pulling cold air through that carbon box, then "whip-cracking" on the down-change into corners
I went on a run up through the local hills a little while back with a good few other old rep-mobiles, sorry M-cars , including another CSL and a carbon-airboxed E30 M3. I still get goosebumps thinking about all the noises being produced
Here's an example (not my car) - might not be to everyone's taste, just does it for me anyway: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9cKmbc5kvRY

Hi Plasticman...........and I thought I was the only chap to shoehorn a Holbay engine into the Sunbeam Alpine i owned in 1980/81. How wrong one can be!
As far as the best induction noise nothing, no nothing beats a Honda NSX at full revs. I still miss mine after 18 months.

Standard S2000 with this intake... Not bias at all...
And a sound video, roof down.

CSL is definitely up there too.

All V12 Mercedes ought to sound like this:

That sounds great! The only let down is that it sounds like it's going a lot faster than it actually is!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oN8pHJ3sQ0Q

3.5 k Evolve carbon airbox sounds simply immense on WOT. I may be slightly biased as I have it fitted to my M3 but it really is something else.
This one any good?http://www.gumtree.com/p/bmw/2003-bmw-m3-smg-modif...
edit: understand these are replica's of CSL?

That sounds good but it sounds more like exhaust than induction noisehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eA75m_7VrQQ
The CSL gets my vote too for intake - nothing comes close.
I enjoyed the webers on my caterham x flow - but the CSL noise is just in another league. Even the intake on my Z4M is pretty good, but the CSL, with that air box...
I like both, I love loud noises! The VW vr6 engine is one of my favourites

They are indeed replicaxs as BMW won't see you original CSL parts unless you own one or have a'friend'. Work computer won't let me uplad pics but here is a link to what the one in my engine bay looks like

Since you're already an owner - what do you think of the M3 i posted? Looks like a good few choice mod's to me.http://www.pistonheads.com/GASSING/topic.asp?h=0&a...
The Maserati 4200 GTs have a fabulous intake noise and a very quiet standard exhaust, the Gransports and Quattroportes were the opposite.
As a kid I used to remove the airbox lid on my twin carb flat four Alfas, the intake roar was awesome, I did the same on my Tipo Sedicivalvole, the scream was immense but it did harm the low down torque. No engine lights to worry about in those days.

Hi e21 mark and indi pearl . The noise my car made was as crisp and loud as I described and to the untrained ear sounded like complete mechanical destruction. I machined the standard inlet manifold which meant there was no chance for any air filter . It also had higher compression and reworked combustion chambers . My griff on throttle bodies does not even come close to the sound !

Although that's AM engined second car. Doesn't sound quite as good as the original. I've always liked this clip to show the contrast between intake (supercharged in this instance) and exhaust noise.

Back in the day I had a couple of MK11 RS2000 Escorts on twin 45's, the intake roar sounded much better than the exhaust.
My second mk2 was on twin 44s and sounded pretty good tooEdited by blade7 on Sunday 21st December 10:43
Also had an EARS system on it which had a great sound on the over-run - a lovely gurgle as you came back down through 2500 rpm
