My dad sold his immaculate 57 plate hawkeye with PPP with 18k miles back in 2010 for £10,500 after advertising it privately for 12k and slowly reducing without any interest at all for around 2 months. Bearing in mind it's now 4-5 years on - go and have a look at the price for a similar model now. I doubt you will find one for under 13 ish grand. Unless you speak of the RB5 or another special rare model then the rest I'm not sure they have at all.
The prices have definitely gone insane!

My ex had an E46 M3 cabrio at the same time that I had a Boxster S. In a straight line the M3 was a whisker ahead. In the bends the Boxster S was a whisker ahead (the hard top M3 might make up that difference). On the average road they were very evenly matched I'd say.Perhaps a little oddly, given the Boxster was designed ground up to be a sports car, the M3 was more fun in a hooligan sort of way. Whilst the Boxster felt as though it had torque, the M3 loved being revved and the only downside of that was on cold mornings when it was hard to change up early to keep revs low and sufficiently warm the engine before giving it the beans. Whereas the Boxster would happily pull low down, the M3 always needed to be revved a little to get moving. It certainly wasn't the most dynamically capable car I have driven by a long shot, but on a clear road it was hard to avoid arriving somewhere with a grin on my chevy chase. The Boxster, a great car though it was, was all a bit efficient in what it delivered and I have found the same of all Porkers outside of the GT2/GT3s.

I'm in the same boat as the OP, Seen a '03 plate blob eye with 33,000 miles and 392 bhp. I know the history of the car and know it has been looked after very well. My budget is 10k. I'm leaning towards a Scooby again. Oh current car is a 2004 4.2 XK8! Had a Impreza turbo wagon before hand. Decisions!!!
I've had a WRX, driven a Boxster 2.7 and currently own an E46 M3. Not quite the same, I know. All good cars and a nice selection. E46 M3 does need to be up to the limiter to feel quick, but it certainly does feel quick if it is in rude health. Boxster is very small for taller drivers. M3 has lots of room (especially with no sunroof). I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed with any of them!

I would hope the homework has been done. They are expensive cars to maintain.I'm handy enough with the spanners myself but would need to make a judgement call on the car itself to decide whether to do certain jobs myself or pay someone else and have a nice receipt to put in the file....
