Are these a ridiculous ownership proposition? My GF wants one and the early ones are buttons. I'm trying to put her off as although 10k buys a tidy looking one surely they will throw up 4 figure bills a few times a year?

A 100k car is still a 100k car to maintain. provided you accept the possibility that something could go wrong and be expensive then you can rest safe in the knowledge that you are driving something very very nice, comfortable and fast. If you cannot live with this burden then you buy something that didn't cost 100k new and enjoy the day to day mediocrity safe in the knowledge that a breakdown isn't going to make you cry! smile

I'm not talking about a turbo here so we are looking at a 50k car. I have had a few cars in this range when they were new. 2xM3 etc but running a used out of Warranty car does not have to cost crazy sums of money. I wouldn't be using a franchised dealer for servicing etc. Also some 50k cars cost massively more than others to run. For example I know RS6 can cost supercar money to run.

I guess I just want to go into it eyes open with the advice of some owners as the four figure bills will ultimately land in my lap.

I run my GTS as a second car. I can do fluids and tyres and discs, pads / general servicing etc myself. The downside with porsche is that if something goes wrong that needs a day at the diagnostic computer then its going to cost you money. The floorpan may be the same as a Tourag but the bits that cost the money are very different.
People run into trouble when they forget that expensive cars are still relatively expensive to look after properly. Your 10k car will have to be carefully chosen. if you can find a low mileage low owner car then chances are it will be OK..Any cars with miles on them and multi owners need looking after though and whether a mini or ferrari parts wear out and need replacing from time to time. Beware the neglected been through about 5 owners in 5 years cars…They are generally getting punted about for a reason.

Early cars have issues with water pipes. Some folk will scare you about bore liner wear which can be an issue on some early 4.5's and non Turbo cars.

if you buy a 10k porsche how much can you realistically loose?? I bet they're worth more broken for spares?

As with anything though they can bite you..a gearbox or engine failure will be the nightmare scenario but generally they are reliable if bought well!

Sorry, I meant Turbo rather than 'S'...Probably wasn't too hard to work that one out though.

I looked at them a while back. The engine on the S has the potential to suffer a catastophic failure which put me off. I don't think the Turbo model suffers the same problems and they only cost a couple of grand more so that's where my money would go.
