Spoke to a friend at RR who says that it's not been 100% confirmed what cargo was on board.

If they're Defenders they'll just need a quick wipe down with a damp cloth.

There will be a lot of rangies/evoques and the odd jag. Defenders aren't all that popular outside of Blighty these days.

According to the news, it seems to be Rolls Royce/Bentley cars. Ouch.
Bentley says no: www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/11701899.Luxury_car_maker...

The Echo is now reporting the following:

The Echo said:
About 1,200 Jaguars and Land Rovers, more than £1m of new Minis and “millions of pounds worth” of JCB construction equipment are on board the stricken vessel.

A spokesman for Jaguar Land Rover confirmed to the Daily Echo that its cars and 4x4s form the majority of the 1,400 vehicles and pieces of equipment on board the ship.

He said: “We can confirm that we have roughly 1,200 Jaguar and Land Rover products aboard the stricken ship.

I suppose now the "best" thing that could happen is the vehicles are destroyed. No manufacturer will want the hassle of trying to get these vehicles into service, and they'll be terrified of them turning up on the grey market.

Don't assume that these transporters come into Southampton empty and leave full.
Very true a lot of our Volvo's are shipped into Southampton and then picked up and leave on another ship.

Can you imagine what the A-Team could achieve if you let them loose in there for a couple of hours?

Somewhere in-between. It sounded very much like a scripted line when he said it!

I posted this in the other thread earlier - Now on my first day at work after Christmas - I had wondered but now its been confirmed as public knowledge so FYI there is (at a guess) £1 - 1.5 million worth of brand new Buses on that boat which were going to Bahrain. Ouch!

They are about 8-9 tonnes empty, so if broken free they will have made a right mess.

Busses vary a lot in price, but £1M worth probably isn't very many although that depends on how that value is derived.

When car transporter companies wreck a car, they have to pay its manufacturing cost - a surprisingly small figure. No idea how it will work in this case, but I would imagine in similar way as they'll just make the cars again.

Yeah might only be 3 or 4 buses.

1200 JLRs though.... OUCH. At an average price of 45k (fagpacket) that's 55m of cars yikes

Yeah, that 20k(ish) MINI costs them what, 10k to actually produce?

I read somewhere that it costs BMW only a little bit more to make a 3 series than a Mondeo, yet sells at a much higher price. Hence the manufacturers are all trying to be 'premium' now to push the profits up.

its 10 or 11. I work for the company that built them - especially annoying as we worked hard to get these on the boat in time! They are midi-buses, not massive.

That's the problem, when its small scale production then its not so easy to just build some more - these are all customer built to spec, not just an off-the-shelf product.

Probably a bit less than that for the MINI, although smaller cars tend to be relatively more costly - what's the difference between a 3 Series and 5 Series, for example? Tiny bit more steel, paint and glass doesn't cost much.

What do ADL do now? Pull out the job sheet and start to make them again or wait and see if they can be recovered?

Ok so my guess at the bus manufacturer was a bit off but the original question still stands smile
