I'd really love one of these, however I'm more than a bit concerned they'd rust to nothing before my eyes.

Do LR do anything to slow the chassis rot these days? Or is it just accepted that some day you'll be buying a new chassis?

Or can you just waxoyl the hell out if it every year?
Eventually you will be rebuilding it.... Land Rover have cut many costs over the years including many parts which were formally galvanized and are now simply painted.

The newer car's rot worse than the older ones.

Thankfully a rebuild is well within the realms of the home mechanic. It's basic construction is designed for dismantling and modifying.

Not sure the run out models are as nice as one that you can have Land Rover build for you - while I kind of like the Heritage one I prefer the bog standard one I had LR build last year for me...

Just put down £1k deposit on a Heritage 90 SW at my local dealer. All I have got is a hand written receipt. I was told the ordering system isn't open yet. Since I put the deposit down on the very first day, I should be able to get it when it comes out. Is this how things normally done?
I've apparently 'reserved' a Heritage 90 Station Wagon, but it's currently cost me £0. No mention of a deposit being taken as the order system isn't yet open. Dealer didn't seem to have any doubts about me getting one.

Anyone have any idea about specs? Are there options on the cars or do you just take them as they come?

Shame they didn't go to town on the Heritage and make it just a little bit more authentic...

I know, I know, there isn't room with the current engine, JLR have no money etc., but it would've been a nice touch to go with the rather token paintjob and steelies?
Great render. I'd like to think they tried more ambitious options such as that, but it wouldn't get past current legislation.

Also... sorry to be pedantic here, but this is the end of the 'Defender', not the end of Land Rover 'Series' vehicles altogether... so really, their homage is more accurate than yours! ... although I (as most others) do love a Series 1!

According to the "product brief" I picked up earlier, there's no air con, no stereo and "specifications are fixed although dealer fit accessories will be possible". Which I read to mean, there's no scope to option it up.

This might be a deal breaker. I know "no frills" is part of the Heritage appeal, but I need a radio and air con if it's really going to serve as a family car.

They do however come with the Convenience Pack (electric windows and central locking) and Cold Climate Pack (heated front screen and heated front seats).

I think JLR missed a trick here. They could have gone balls out and created a rubicon style LE model. IE locking diffs, big tyres and several other 4x4 trinkets that the off roading brigade fit, instead they throw some paint at the standard models.

Not really bothered by these run out models. I am more interested in the replacement will be. Rumour has it, it will be a modular construction with multiple body styles available.

Defender prices are really on the rise. When I looked at buying a 200tdi 90 a few years ago, you could pick up one for £2.5 ish. No hope now. Expect to pay high threes now.

You can now download the brochure from Landrover website. It tells you all the specs. And the car comes as it is. However, you can still have the dealer fitted options like standard Defenders. But I guess thats something you should avoid in order to keep the value...

Does anyone know if there are plans for a replacement?

Surely there is a market for a JLR equivalent to the Navara, Ranger and Hilux?

What was the deal with the Santana? Was that built under license? Or is it a different car underneath, just happened to look very similar?

It's effectively a modernised Series III with an Iveco engine 2wd/4wd & poorly built in Spain apparently. I quite like the look of them though.

I don't believe there will be a replacement in that vein. In order to make that type of vehicle work you need to be able to build them in volumes that JLR is nowhere near able to meet and also create a massive global sales network that is in completely different locations to their current shops.

The real reason the product as it is is being dropped is that the factory space and staff used to build the 10-15k of these cars a year for just a few £thousand margin per unit can be better used for producing products with ten times the profit margin.

There still seems to be talks of a replacement so one can only assume any such product would be aimed at the premium recreation market where a low volume product can be sold with high margins.

I wonder how easily they could adapt the Discovery platform. - Surely if the likes of VW can market eleventy billion Golfs in drag, LR can stick different bodies on the same chassis and maintain some credibility?

Two of these cars look like they belong in Cheshire. One looks like it belongs in Wiltshire.

The green one please.

You need to put £1k down. The dealers have not yet been allocated cars but were taking orders from yesterday. Dealer I spoke to took 5 orders this morning...

Friendly dealer also said there is are no details yet on options - although anything "bolt on" you can clearly add regardless. Interior might be tougher...

The LR product info pack for dealers is clear: "specifications are fixed although dealer fit accessories will be possible".
