Looking to buy a plate - SA51 PNK

No one is denying that the plate doesn't have 'value'. Due to the way private plates are issued in this country every transferable plate has some sort of 'value'.
What is up for debate (and has been from the start) is the particular value of this plate, because safe for perhaps maybe 5 people in the entire country this particular plate is meaningless and therefore worthless.
Again, I'll say the 'attitude' of the seller hasn't really reflected this, in fact on the contray he has been trying to build up the plate as much as possible - Buying the car for the plate (yeah, right), that he was going to move the plate onto another car (yeah, right), that it would look good on a pink car, keeping us updated with the 'numerous' offers, etc. Seemingly forgetting that we are fundamentally talking about a crap plate (regardless of its 'value' to a handful of nutters.)
To me personally I find it a bit insulting to the OP who is the only reason the vendor is going to receive a penny.

Unfortunately this thread seems to have been self-defeating for the OP.
On the one hand without it it's unlikely he'd have located the current owner, without DVLA shenanigans anyway.
On the other hand it's fed the delusion of the owner that the plate is more valuable than it is. Unfortunately as soon as it became obvious that the owner was looking to exploit the situation the OP had little chance of actually getting the plate for a reasonable price.
Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with wanting the best price for something, but manufacturing false value (bought the car for it, transferring it to another car, other guff) for something that you're not actively selling and in my opinion didn't honestly know had some value feels disingenuous. Sellers with that attitude are in my opinion not worth dealing with on something you can ultimately take or leave.
As it stands I think most people, myself included, wouldn't even think that this plate was personalised if they glanced at it on the road, unless it was misspaced as seems de rigueur with such things. Despite what the seller has said I don't believe he thought it had much if any value either, until this thread surfaced of course.
If it has sold then I guess we can chalk this up to one of life's mysteries - someone trolled the OP outbidding him on a plate that practically everyone would need to be told "what it says". Regardless of the legitimacy of the sale, I wouldn't have wanted to deal with the seller anyway on the face of it.
Also +1 to what 279 said.

We're not discussing doing a random stranger a favour, we're saying that it's not a £1k plate, and you've also admitted that. £500 would be costs +£375 at top whack - I don't think it's worth any more than that. The OP came on here to find a relatively simple plate that meant something to his wife, it won't even look like a private plate! If the OP has got more than what the OP bid for it, then fair enough, but I wouldn't be surprised to look up the plate in a few months and still find it on a Freelander.

If someone still has the original plate on a 31 year old car, it would smack of ste maintainance to me.
Most plates delaminate and look cack within 8 years or so..

Why are people bhing about the seller? The op wanted the plate but then when the owner turned up, wouldn't put his money anywhere near his mouth
It doesn't sound like he even was offering £500
Timewasting, frankly.
This, seller can do whatever he wants, he's in no way obliged to sell to the OP, to the highest bidder or to anybody. And it isn't even the OP bhing, it's the voyeurs/armchair experts in this thread. It doesn't sound like he even was offering £500

The OP sounds like he put in a cheeky offer, probably £80 transfer fee plus a few quid. Don't think it was anywhere near the values some people are mentioning.
