What a shed!

Guy round the corner from my parents house had one of these when I was growing up. Same colour, VR6, always thought it looked awesome.

Even if you chucked £2K at this getting it mint you'd still come out ahead, non?

Am I alone in thinking these are fugly crap cars? Most unimpressed when I drove one. Poor shed IMO
My mate had a newish G60: he took me out in it for a drive and it let go at the back end on a dry road at not particularly fast speed. We thought a tyre had burst, stopped and got out to check, but there was nothing obviously amiss. We tip-toed back to his house and he booked it in with the VW dealer to check it over properly. They also found nothing wrong with it. Weird. He got rid of it soon after.

Mine did similar and took it to a specialist. They advised that the rear bushes needed changing as they had completely perished. Corrado's have passive rear steering. Wonderful cars if everything is as it should be.

Go Shed!!!!

It's a good thing that car isn't too local to me as I'd be tempted to have a look.

For £1k it doesn't look too bad at all , it could definitely benefit from having some money spent on it to try and bring it up to a good standard for a daily runner. The big concern on VR6 is the timing chains and tensioners, if you are going to get them done then it is VERY worth while considering doing the clutch and head gasket at the same time as it is far easier to do it all in one go. If you can handle the spanner work yourself then I recently did clutch/headgasket/chains tensioners & guides/ rebuilt head/ all new gaskets/seals, waterpump, ancillary tensioner, throughout for around £650 in parts - a garage would charge somewhere in the region of £1500 for all that but there are guys on the VR6 owners club and specialists that can do chains/tensioners on their own for £500-600.

With a few jobs done and a bit of paint the SHED car could easily fetch over £2k and I think the best Corrados now are fetching nearer to £5k

On the body differences there are quite a few difference between the early 1989>1991 cars and the later 1992> onwards cars regardless of it being a 4 cylinder 2.0l 16v/G60/Vr6.

All late cars will have:
- slightly wider front wings
- the bonnets were changed from having a downward middle section to having the raised bonnet *(to allow the VR6 to fit)
- the headlamps were changed to a design with a wider surround that stand further forward
- deeper 90mm front splitter vs the shallow 45mm on early cars
- the grills changed with later cars having less slats
- the indicators and fog lights were changed from being inset to being flush with the bumper
- different interior, be VERY CAREFUL with the heater control panel as these are very fragile on late cars!
- hopefully black carpets, these are far more desirable than the grey carpets and dash that early UK cars came with.

Then Vr6s have:
- wider FRONT track 9mm per side iirc
- this was achieved by using different lower arms & track rods to 4 cylinder models
- slightly revised suspension geometry
- 205/50 tyres vs the 195s of the cylinder variants.

The above is what accounts for the bulk of the difference in feel between 4 an 6 cylinder cars.

It's also worth pointing out that anyone who comes along and says they or their mate had a mk3 Golf Vr6 and it was rubbish should really try a Corrado, I cannot stress how different the two cars are and how much better the Corrado is!!!!

Random pick of my daily Vr6 which is dark burgundy pearl which I paid £750 for 15 months ago as a stop gap car but 15 months on I'm still loving it and genuinely surprised at how many positive comments it gets especially from non petrolheads who seem to really like the NOISE - oh the VR6 noise wonderful.

And the slightly more special Pearl aqua blue VR6 which is extensively modified.

I've also got a G60 and garage full of Corrado bits plus a breaker which should help keep my Corrado fleet on the road for many years to come.

Was it not the Mk11 Scirocco that the Corrado replaced?

Mk1 1974-1981 (launched before the Golf Mk1 to eradicate any teething problems in the FWD platform)
Mk11 1981-1992

never really been 100% sure about the corrado its a vw parts bin special, a mk2 golf chassis, a mk3 golf engine and gearbo with a passat dash board, then VW charged almost 20k in the 1990's no wonder it didn't sell.

...also some parts are no longer available (from vw or 3rd parties) , and at this age RUST RUST and more RUST (what shed hasn't ) having said that i've always wanted the G60 version (lighter so better handling and a much faster midrange) !! and still would have one.

Part availability is becoming a tad difficult - usually weird trim pieces though more than anything fundamental.

Rust really isn't that big a deal on these however. Good undercoating etc mean that a lot of these cars are still in great shape and it's usually only bad accident repair, or underseal damage that hasn't been repaired, which is causing rust.

That was my first though.

The main reason I liked these was because it's the first car I saw raise it's spoiler while I was following it. That was the coolest thing I'd ever seen (possibly).

I always liked these back in the day, but I didn't begin to consider one when recently looking for a car. Wish I'd considered one now ..

Prices seem to be quite strong.

There's a 91 G60 on autotrader for £11k with 28k on the clock.

Something not adding up here for me, but I like to be different...

For example, photos are 'professional' with a fair bit of thought and effort, but car only has 2/3 weeks MOT?
Photos of the car are all taken from a distance (like the Bette Middler song), so look great but you can't see any defects (if it has any). Not that photos or an ad should feature any defects-car dealers never do.
'Uncle' living abroad? Hmmm. Good way of not being 'sure' of any issues the car might have?

There is a saying if it is too good to be true...
However, good fortune can land in the lap of someone with wide trousers.

Yep - that guy is a trader who picked that up for something like half that price. If you want to buy one, keep your eyes out on the enthusiast forums / VW club websites, and avoid traders who buying these and trying to resell them at insane prices!

Maybe its me, but £11k doesn't sound too insane if that car is as good as the ad suggests (and that might be a big if).

In the context of Mk2 Escorts, 205 GTis and Mk1 & Mk2 Golf GTis that is....

Irrelevant. This is one to buy and restore. Guess that doesn't make it a shed then. Oh well....

Do I need another Corrado?

Had my valver for 5 years now, don't think I'll ever be getting rid of it.

Whoever does buy it, is getting a real bargain.
