OP, I've seen better, I've seen worse work, but a lack of spec and detail probably won't help you.

I'd suggest going in person and trying to have a chat over a cup of tea rather than an all guns blazing approach, but I suspect this is an expensive lesson. Maybe try the BMW owners club for recommendations as to someone who has done this already and get it to a standard you like?

I wouldn't stick twin pipes on my 320d either, but it's a free country.
I was thinking that, its very playground. I can deal with a nasty comment if its funny, but most of these are just nasty.
Unfortunately nowadays it seems to be the PH way, people offer nothing constructive blindly join other sad little keyboard warriors trying to out point each other.
Agreed - totally unnecessary; seems to have brought out the PH internet bullies.
+1

It's a good modification when done properly as the twin-exit exhaust balances out the rear of the car - it's not like the OP is putting a 435i badge on the car.

Having seen the photos I think that the constructor has routed the pipe that way to avoid heat damage. One of the photos gives the impression that it could have been routed between the back box and the bumper, but they may have been worried that it would be too close the to the (plastic?) bumper.

In fairness, £300 for work and materials doesn't seem too bad a price, certainly if that is the price VAT included. I have paid a fair bit more for custom exhaust work on one of my cars.

yes

He's got a 4 series BMW. Good for him. If the OP wants twin pipes it's his choice. We all like different things, that's why restaurants have menus.

When did PH get so elitist?

How much does it cost for a genuine twin pipe back box?

Would the 435i backbox have fitted?

Just a thought....

Would you inform your insurance of this mod?

I am somewhat concerned that the "final" pic doesn't look too bad to me...

I wouldn't personally.

It's just an extra tailpipe which does nothing and is purely for decoration.

To be fair to the OP, I think adding the BMW twin cutout diffuser and twin tailpipes is a nice addition but the tailpipes could be a better fit.

I once fitted a full OEM R32 body kit to a Mk4 Golf TDi 130 and had a proper custom twin outlet exhaust installed to fit the R32 bumper. It belched black diesel smoke out of both sides equally smile

But does it not change the perception of the car? Make it more desireable, more attractive to thieves?
Sure there's got to be a cut off for this (would you declare an M3 badge, different wheels, mud flaps????) but for something like this then yes I'd tell them - just for the sake of them then saying it's not as standard and not paying out.

if i were you OP, go down to your local BMW dealer and locate a 435 D, and take loads of pics from the back, underside rear side etc, also take your tape measure with you and make some measurements from pipe to pipe, pipe protrusions etc. then take this info to the garage, bung them another 50 and they have something to work towards.

if its any help, in my opinion it looks OK, however i always think with mods like this though its all personal. Because people who don't know cars wont care and those that do will know its a 420 by other facets.

If you decide you're stuck with it, you could spray the connector pipe with black high-temp paint....less visible from a distance!

"Lovely new BMW that bloke has"

"poor bloke, couldn't afford the BMW he really wanted"

My thoughts would be either of those, depending whether you'd had that work done or not.

To be honest, it doesn't look that bad. Perhaps the lowness of the new exhaust pipe is exacerbated in the picture due to the fact that it's in the air on a ramp. Once it's on the ground, I doubt you'll see it.

Not sure why everyone is jumping up and down on the price. I have seen full custom jobs for £400 - 500 so shirly adapting the existing exhaust is cheaper. Execution certainly isn't the best mind.

Out of interest what price are off the shelf cat back systems?

A titanium cat back exhaust for my RX was only £450.

Christ people on here can be aholes can't they? The guy isn't trying to pretend it's an M4 - all the nasty comments about him not being able to afford the car he really wants just aren't relevant to the topic and aren't needed.

The OP wanted the dual exhaust look, because it looks better in his eyes than a single exit - and I agree, it does genuinely. I think some cars look odd with non-symmetrical exhausts, I like symmetry on my cars - luckily mine have had it from the factory, but if I were in the OP's shoes I would just buy a dual exist back box rather than try and fab it, but I guess a new genuine back box would be the more expensive route?
