Still think of them as £60k. At £300k it isn't likely to happen - bring on the crash please.

Completely agree. It doesn't seem long ago that Daytonas were £100k and these were around £40k. At the time I remember thinking that I'd one day have one of these. Not at £300k I won't.

(although to be honest, I don't even have the spare £40k these days!)

Wow - £46k. Looks nice (apart from that continental need to change wheels).
Isn't there VAT/import duty to add to that and then some conversion costs prior to MOT and registration?

Yes, but there is haggling + the lights flick to RHD with a switch at the back of the lights + the speedo flicks to MPH with a dash switch + the fog light at the back is a 10min job to re-wire.

The import and VAT are on the invoice value of the car... errrr, cough, cough, wink Moreover, the advertised price includes a 12mth warranty in Switzerland, which you will wave, hence can haggle it down even further... Overall, a mahoosive saving vs. the UK

I didn't realise that the CHF has given back most of the huge sudden gain in mid-Jan, so it's only about 5% stronger against GBP than it was 2 months ago.

The NOVA/submission to HMRC is a legal document, yes? Is the Swiss dealer fiddling the books, too?

Whenever I look at a car outside the EU I look at the sticker price plus 20% VAT and 10% duty. Things which have the initial appeal of a bargain look a little less so when you make sure the revenue gets the chunk they're entitled to. If you can get anything off the sticker price then that's all well and good.

Quoting prices on here suggesting people can buy some of these cars at the figures mentioned is somewhat misleading.

Have you bought cars from outside the EU? FYI, VAT is only due on the duty + shipping in theory, not the whole price. As to invoice value - I shall comment no further, obviously you have dealt with foreign dealers a lot more than I have...

One last thing, a quick trawl through the EU shows plenty of EU cars, which can be had in the EU sans duty and VAT around the £45 to £50k mark for 997.1 CS from a dealer. Or is that somewhat misleading too?

So if I were to buy a £46k sticker-priced 997GT3 in Italy or Germany, say, what additional costs would I need to pay? Vat, any other tax, duty?

And is it fair to say the "conversion" to UK costs are minimal (foglight wiring you mentioned before, plus a couple of switches to switch)?

I'm not in the market for one, just genuinely interested in the finances.

If you are to buy a GT3 anywhere in the EU - from the Balkans to France, no further duty or VAT is due provided the car had its VAT paid upon first registration wherever that may be within the EU. As you can imagine, that is the case with 99.9% of the 2nd hand cars for sale.

Ok, let's say you have bought the car in Germany like I did in August 2014. You have three choices. You can buy the red export plates for a week/month, which give you 3d party insurance and then drive the car back. Costs vary, but expect about EUR175 for a week from memory. You can ask the dealer to leave you the plates on the car, you drive it back to the UK, then post them back and wait for the dealer to deregister the car and then post you back the Fahrzeugbrief, which you will need for the DVLA. That's what I did. Thirdly, you can go there with a trailer and tow it back.

Ok, you have made it here in the UK in one piece. You need a MOT. If it has litronic lights - flick the switch and you are done. If not, you will need RHD lights - plenty on eBay. Switch the speedo to miles using the dash knob. Run two wires from one side of the car to the other to flip the rear foglight. You are done. If you are importing a 996, it is over 10yrs old so you don't need a certificate of conformity. If a 997 - you will need one. Most German dealers will give you one as part of the receipt. If not - Porsche GB will issue one for £60. Ask the DVLA to send you the import pack. Fill it in. Go to the HMRC website and fill in the import declaration form there. You will need to pay a registration fee with the DVLA in the UK - it is from memory £38 - completely forgotten the actual amount despite importing in August last year. You will need to pay VED for 6 or 12 mths. Wait anxiously for 2 weeks roughly. Get the form authorising you to have plates made. Insure the car on its new reg, go out for a drive. Grin.

So all in, your costs are probably around £1000 max - I managed it for £500 using air miles to go there and Norfolkline on the way back.
