I don't normally post, but I do believe LOH has been given a very hard time here. Whilst that very specific example may be one which won't be affected in the crash, by and large the UK market I agree will be. There's a lot of cars out there at the moment which I wouldn't feel comfortable sinking my money in to when the market sinks.
We are in a complete bubble at the moment, and it's getting really quite ridiculous. Great for current owners, but not for those who want to buy - just like the housing market is doing (certainly round here). It's bonkers.

I did not mean to come across as giving him a hard time. You are right - the buble here is mad. £100k merely to get a 991RS slot? Seriously, does this car cure cancer? Or perhaps it can defeat ISIS by turning on the headlights? We are in a complete bubble at the moment, and it's getting really quite ridiculous. But I also wanted to inject a dose of reality. Believe me, I buy and sell bonds for a living. Stupid free money is here to stay for a while.
When it goes pop it may be painful, but the can will be kicked down the road for a while...

One of the most fantastic looking cars ever to have existed.
I suspect this has been linked in the past but its worth a watch again.
What a truly sensational, visceral musical creation.

Whenever I look at a car outside the EU I look at the sticker price plus 20% VAT and 10% duty. Things which have the initial appeal of a bargain look a little less so when you make sure the revenue gets the chunk they're entitled to. If you can get anything off the sticker price then that's all well and good.
Quoting prices on here suggesting people can buy some of these cars at the figures mentioned is somewhat misleading.
Have you bought cars from outside the EU? FYI, VAT is only due on the duty + shipping in theory, not the whole price. As to invoice value - I shall comment no further, obviously you have dealt with foreign dealers a lot more than I have... Quoting prices on here suggesting people can buy some of these cars at the figures mentioned is somewhat misleading.
One last thing, a quick trawl through the EU shows plenty of EU cars, which can be had in the EU sans duty and VAT around the £45 to £50k mark for 997.1 CS from a dealer. Or is that somewhat misleading too?
There are various variants on the theme depending on trade agreements and such like but I believe those values to be correct. There are various sites online which include calculators, such as http://www.dutycalculator.com/ which appear to validate the above, but they could be wrong, too.
The Swiss car above, if non-EU, would be over 55k before add ons, so call it 57k. Not quite the bargain it appears, which is where things are misleading (where I said "some" of the examples).
I've spoken with various dealers but only dealt with a few. The level of service varies massively.
My other point was that if you were, as you were suggesting, minded to declare a "cough cough" invoice price then one would imagine that if the paperwork doesn't tie up all the way down the line one phone call from HMRC puts that person with the "cough cough" invoice price in a potentially challenging conversation with regard to unpaid taxes.
I do keep tabs on prices of things like GT3s, just as a matter of interest e.g. the OPC in Hamburg has a CS at around 54k. Strong GBP:EUR is a boon right now. It's down to individuals whether LHD is worth the saving. I'd also suggest we're talking about a relatively high risk vehicle in terms of purchase and location and provenance are key factors and due diligence is imperative. Having said that, as we well know around these parts it's perfectly possible to buy a bent GT3 from an OPC here in the UK.
To your summary of the process above I would add the provision for transferring funds, ideally in the most cost effective manner, and allowing the time for that process to complete.
FWIW the cost of the registration fee is £55.

Ok, let's say you have bought the car in Germany like I did in August 2014. You have three choices. You can buy the red export plates for a week/month, which give you 3d party insurance and then drive the car back. Costs vary, but expect about EUR175 for a week from memory. You can ask the dealer to leave you the plates on the car, you drive it back to the UK, then post them back and wait for the dealer to deregister the car and then post you back the Fahrzeugbrief, which you will need for the DVLA. That's what I did. Thirdly, you can go there with a trailer and tow it back.
I wouldn't recommend trying to export a car on its original plate. The authorities take a dim view of this, and I know of someone who had the car impounded in these circumstances. The export plates are cheap enough to not take this risk imoEdited by Cheburator mk2 on Thursday 5th March 19:57

I think the whole process is one gigantic grey area. I was pressed for time - could only fly into Hamburg on a Saturday morning, which would have made de-registering the car and issuing the red plates a very touch and go situation with regards to time. We then thought about buying the yellow plates, but were told by other dealers that although perfectly legal (we have used them in the past), the French and the Belgian police have started taking an increasingly hard line against. That left the option to keep the car registered in Germany and drive it back on its original plates. I was insured fully comp throughout the journey via the dealer's insurance policy and as soon as the car entered the UK, it was driven to a garage for its MOT where it remained till the DVLA assigned it a new registration mark. It would be nice if we can get a coherent EU wide policy to cover this because the last thing you want is to be on the side of the E40 on a cold and rainy night explaining things to a gruff French policeman.
P.S. And don't get me started on buying a rust free Lancia Delta or 320iS from Italy. They make the German regulations look perfectly clear...

I cannot recall ever seeing a more beautiful modern car; truly beautiful.Always a reason for the sale, either onwards and upwards, the need for change or circumstantial.
It wasn't practical as a daily any more and I couldn't justify the cost to get it up to scratch as a weekend toy, plus I was all set on an SL.
Still, it's a bit of a wrench letting them go.
Now the SL idea is out I'm trying to think of what I can get that will make me feel like this again.
