Or in more detail;
Category A: scrap only. For cars so badly damaged they should be crushed and never re-appear on the road. Even salvageable parts must be destroyed.
Category B: body shell should be crushed. Signifies extensive damage, although some parts are salvageable. Should never re-appear on road, although reclaimed parts can be used in other road-going vehicles.
Category C: the vehicle is repairable but the costs exceed the vehicle’s value. Can re-appear on road.
Category D: the vehicle is repairable but repair costs are significant compared to the vehicle value – including time delays to source parts. Can re-appear on road

£13k for a Cat C E39 M5 is ludicrous regardless of rarity of spec or condition. That's top-end even for an absolutely pristine car isn't it?
I'd agree, looks in great shape but too dear at £13k. Out of interest (and my ignorance) what's the difference between a Cat C stolen/recovered and a Cat D stolen/recovered?

Drive past this place most days, spotted this looking more than a bit inviting with it's unbadged, small wheeled subtlety and refreshing non-blick interior:

Non-black really does make the e90 interior so much more pleasing. http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/b...

According to the advert there was no damage.......
When my 928 was stolen it was driven with a failed water pump leading to a seized engine. It was written off as Cat D, I bought the car back and replaced the engine (and suspension, brakes, etc etc). There was no "damage" as such, in the sense that you'd associate with the impled violence of theft - it could have been damaged just as easily by being driven unsympathetically by its owner with the fault it had. When I see Cat C/D I'm worried about basically smashed up cars being repaired poorly, chassis damage etc. I don't know what happened to this M5 but maybe it was a similar story.

Not the cheapest but looks an absolute minter and next to no mileage.

Sub 100k miles, sub £10k, FBMWSH, subframe done, *that* interior, not being sold from the more usual local authority type environs of cheaper M3s, lots of potential...

Quite simple mon ami;Cat C: Cost of repairs are MORE than the vehicle is worth
Cat D: Cost of repairs are a SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT of the vehicles value
Quite often it's Cat D is the cost of rectifying the damage plus the costs of providing a loan car for the duration exceed the value of the vehicle, whereas for C, the damage alone is greater than the market value of the vehicle.
For instance a part/parts may have a relatively low monetary cost itself, but if it is scarce and takes six weeks to arrive, the overall cost to the insurer renders the overall repair uneconomical to carry out, whereas the cash value of the repair alone wouldn't necessarily be sufficient to warrant a write-off payout.
