Took delivery of new Defender over the weekend.

Steering is a bit wooden, but ride is very ply-able. hehe

I'm happy to build and supply for anyone that wants to send me the requisite £65K. biggrin

What w124 are you running?
1994 E280 7 seat wagon, blue-black metallic and mushroom leather. 165k. Aircon, walnut trim. No rust. 2 sets of wheels (she is on Conti winter contacts on the black steels at the moment so looks like a proper German). Everything works (other than a squeaky fan belt)

Sounds nice. smile

What issues have you been having with it?

Yes, but I have retrofitted genuine M-B orange indicator lenses which suit the design so much better.

Just had the whole cooling system replaced, new exhaust system, poly belt, fan belt, radiator, new sunroof cassette... I wouldn't mind but I stupidly bought one from a specialist dealer rather than privately and probably paid £2/3k over the odds thinking I would get a 'good one'.

Whereas the reality is you can expect to be spending £2k/year with a complex 20 year old car whatever and so-called specialist dealers in these old cars generally do little meaningful prep.

Sorry to hear (although it's not dissimilar to my experience with older cars). And every time that big repair bill comes you think, "This will be the last one and it will be reliable for ages now." hehebanghead

Hopefully this question is in the correct thread...or maybe it's not a question but a need for reassurance.

Long version

As my name suggests, I'm more used to screaming inline 4s and also using a 2.2 oil burner for my daily.

I was going to get a new CTR but if, as the PH news article suggests, Honda have bottled it and are planning to launch a watered down version, then I'm going to take my budget and get something completely different.

My thoughts and therefore searching is focusing around 7 series, CLS or Jag XJs or similar.

Now I should be worried about economy as I do 80 miles a day...however, after driving a diesel for 3 years as my daily, I don't really give a fig as long as it's sensible sat at 75'ish with the cruise locked on...so diesel or petrol

I'm thinking of the £15k to £20k and I'll put a few £k to one side for unexpected costs. I would ideally like the first 12 months cost free save for petrol/tax/MOT.

Insurance etc is a non-issues.

Should I concentrating on low mileage because I'll be racking it up, or not worry about it as big engine cars are unstressed and will go on forever.

Anything else I should be looking for? I'm happy to travel for the right car so is there a known dealer people would recommend? I have no spanner skills at all and I'm not looking to start...

Short Version

£15k to £20k
Petrol or Diesel
Thinking along the lines of 7 series, Jag XJ, Merc CLS etc
Will be doing 80 miles a day so need reliability
I have no mechanical skills or tools.

Just a thought.

When you need to advertise your car for sale, instead spending 2 precious hours of your working day growling at a screen and throwing the mouse across the room when using Autotrader's website, wouldn't it be bliss if you could spend 60 seconds contacting one of their representatives, using a telephone and things called spoken words, who took your booking, came to your place of choice, took a snap of your car and published your ad to the car buying public at the next opportunity?

Pie in the sky stuff I know, but we can but fantasise.
