Can't remember the last time I saw a Croma on the road! A guy locally to me has a nice looking daily driver of a Thema Turbo which is pretty cool

So lately I have been thinking of getting a 'keeper' from my year of birth (no, not 1926) to use as a bit of a daily driver seeing as I don't have a commute to contend/deal with.

A few things have crossed my mind but 1979 is a tricky year I think. However, seeing as a tweaked '68 MGB GT has just been added to the family fleet in the last few days that got me thinking to something similar which then led me to something I have fancied for a long time now; a Midget. And no, none of those jokes thanks wink

Spookily the one that caught my eye this evening is being sold by a good friend of mine that I bought the since sold '66 MGB GT from and thus am meeting him for a beer next week.

I know that the rubber bumpered cars get a somewhat mixed review but imho as the years go on they are ageing rather well and certainly a safe place to put money.....

But tempted as time goes on to make it look like this......

And tweak and uprate as time goes by and just generally have fun with it and maybe do this sort of thing with it too.....

I thoroughly expect it to be 'wasted' on the Thread but I do rather think that as a daily driver it would suit me down to the ground driving :flatcap:
Lightly breathed upon K series

Just sayin'.

It's on their website at the same price. 1,286 miles.

I'm like a coiled spring.

In other news, does anyone know much about what Bentley did the the donor BMW 4.4 engine when they stuck it in the Arnage? Obviously it got forced induction, but what else was changed?

I think the work on the engine was done by Cosworth. 350 bhp ish and 420 lb ft torque I think. Given that engine was conservatively rated by BMw at 286bhp it doesn't seem, apart from the 2 turbos, a huge amount of work may have been done?

40% increase in torque and a broader spread/less peaky delivery were the aims, rather than simply max power (ample torque more useful when the thing is half a tonne over an E38 iL). I'd have assumed different spec pistons to account for the different compression ratio and improved cooling pathways and uprated cooling system were features at the very least.

Have always thought it would be fun to retro-fit that unit to an E38 728i donor (less kit than the 40/50i/iLs, saving 250-300kg), or an E39.

I'd suspect it's a similarly conservative official output for the Bentley spec motor too, given that with little more than a 200cc increase and no added forced induction, ALPINA managed around 350bhp & 350 lb ft, themselves notorious for "under-reporting" outputs...

I like the stealth one. Not that I can be bothered to even dream, given how they've clearly become too exotic for even the fantasies of mere mortals.

Quick question men: How much of a headache is a slightly rattly single VANOS?

And if it's not necessarily a cause to run away fast, how much would you need to chip the price?

Depends which model we're talking about. But not that much of a headache these days, with people like DrVanos around.

Granted its double vanos but as a very VERY rough guide. My M3 had a exchange/replacement vanos from MrVanos last year for £700.

Give this guy a call for a proper price: http://www.mrvanos.com/Single-Vanos(1897604).htm

M54, 3400cc wink The single VANOS is standard BMW fayre though.

Apparently the car runs fine but the unit does rattle slightly. So my limited mechanical knowledge suggests the seals are fine, but the bearing is on its way. Haven't heard it myself, but trying to weigh up the options before schlepping to the other side of the country.

Thinking £6-700 to pay a man to sort it?
