The Best ///M/Barge/General Rant/Look at this/O/T (Vol XVII)
Discussion
Let's say, hypothetically, one was going to move to somewhere that was higher up in the mountains of UK with quiet roads and therefore occasionally got plenty of snow in the winter. Would you brave it and keep the E61 M5 Touring (I have a set of winters!!) or try to find something to replace it? Do I HAVE to have 4wd? The only time we'd still need to get out is for the school run, but we'd only be 1.5 miles from the school so could walk if it was really bad, right? If you were going to replace it, with what? I like performance, I have to have practicability and space, and I need something that can haul at least 5 bikes on it. I've never owned a single 4x4 vehicle. I've looked at old Disco's, but the handling made something inside me die.
Re hills, snow 'n that:
Depends really. I moved up to the Dales from central London. My gaff is at 1000ft asl and we regularly get proper snow. The type you can ski on.
Over the last 5 years I've run:
L322 Rangie - fine, obv
E39 530i on winters - fine, fun, massive skidz
Wifey's Mk4 Golf TDi on winters - as good as the Rangie, only stopped by depth of snow
Misc classic rally cars - all mega, fo sho
If I were in your shoes, and you like the car you currently have, I'd do what's suggested above and buy another car for winter slogging. With these new car tax rules it's a piece of piss to tax/SORN/tax month by month. No reason at all not to have a massive fleet.
For what it's worth I'd be buying a Subaru Impreza (non turbo boggo snotter), slinging on a set of mid market winter tyres (prob £300 fitted max) and hooning round in that from Nov-Feb.

I live a bit higher up than benjj, but not in as posh a spot, therefore our snow is for hurling at innocent passers by whilst wearing a T-shirt, rather than skiing. But other than that what he says is true. You'd be fine with decent winters on a five series. In the past I have driven past an XC90 with all four wheels spinning in my winter shod three series. So, enjoy the fresh air and the countryside, and after you've been there for a bit you'll no doubt end up buying something for pottering about in anyway. I like buying cars and hate buying tyres, so would have to go here.

Heavy snow, bouncing off the walls, doing the school run with all the kids from the village in the back. They'd love it and you'll be Hero Dad.

Been driving around in a borrowed Continental Speed today. S'alright. Fast. Bit embarrassing. Tinny inside. More nimble than expected. Pops and bangs. Terrible stereo. 5.5/10.

Keep the M5, buy a cheap spotter 4x4 for heavy winter duties.
I worry less in the winter about my ability to get places, more the ability of others not to crash into me. I'd care less in something snotty.
This is the correct answer.I worry less in the winter about my ability to get places, more the ability of others not to crash into me. I'd care less in something snotty.
Today, I think I'd buy a Lada Niva/Riva
And I think I've just found the perfect 'cheap' 4x4: How about this piece of V8 spanish loveliness - what can go wrong? http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/l...

ETA.
He appears to have a few of them....maybe he'd chuck them in for spares, sounds like it needs them.
I'd call £750 optimistic.
Still want one.

Winter in t'Dales, my style:

On t'top t'Buttertubbs Pass
Slots for t'eyes

T' Saab what I forgot I'd owned. T'was 't worst f'kin car I've ever owned
So what you're saying is, as long as the snow is no more than a few inches deep, 500bhp through the rear wheels will be fine! Out on t'road:
On t'top t'Buttertubbs Pass
Slots for t'eyes
T'drive to t'office
Out on't road again
T' Saab what I forgot I'd owned. T'was 't worst f'kin car I've ever owned
