By the way, the dealer has gone quiet on that Cat D elise 160 from a few pages back. As time passes, I'm also starting to think that if I go down the Elise route, a good 160 is the way to go, so I think I've mentally moved on from the cat D "bargain".
Also consider an s1 111s. A little less peak power and perhaps less instantly attractive (not as low, I think?) but a very well-behaved engine compared to the 160.
Agreed - S160 is my first choice, but a 111S would be a good second. Or I quite fancy a Honda-engined S1 - not many around and often too expensive.

the nice thing about the 111S is the c/r gearbox that was fitted, 4th to 5th on the std cars always felt slightly off but tbh spirited a/b road driving is mostly in 3rd/4th so not a major issue.

This looks well.

A good 16v is the Mk3 of choice IMO. Never really liked the VR6 to drive despite the rather sonorous donkey.

Wonder how well it would drive these days?
I really quite fancy a Mk3 gti as a runabout. I had a (very!) cheap 16v a few years back and it was a complete dog. But I'm pretty sure that was the result of neglect rather than deficiencies with the car per se.

Surprisingly purposeful. The 190 engine does make them a lot more appealing, presume it's a fairly simple swap?
From what I've read, relatively so, as far as engine swaps go anyway. Chucking a V6 can be more problematic.
These are ripe for a turbo'd 'busa engine. Can be done in the Elise so one assumes its possible.

Blimey, I obviously need to grow an Elise beard - I thought the Sport 135 and Sport 160 both had the c/r box, but not the 111S...

Slightly unusual mix of form and substance in this

It does look good, though.

'My' S160 had the close ratio box. Can't take the credit for fitting it. Definitely made it lively enough.
