Nope!

Late 940 Turbo or 960 estate for RWD?

I have kept a copy of a Practical Performance Car issue about Volvo 940 turbo tuning just in case I ever buy one. hehe

Anyone looking for a fast estate:

Kicking myself (although I love it) for picking up a 545i SE Touring about a month back when looking for a 550i!
I believe this car has NO sunroof. I am out.

There will be a few low mileage V10 M5 E61s around, I'm sure.
There may well be, that's true. I should have qualified my statement more. I prefer the large-engine, more sleeper-looking cars with the lower bork factor and M/ RS tax, hence why I didn't go RS6 or M5. I don't think I'd ever be 'on it' while driving that car, especially not with the dog/ family on board, so I don't need the extra 'edge'. I have the Clio V6 for that.

On paper they sound great. The first 545i I ever saw was a Touring at Silverstone and it was Tiff Needell's. We're talking 2003/4 in se spec. I test drove one about 6 months ago and it didn't really grab me. They are just very big aren't they. It's always going to struggle to feel exciting if it is massive. Which is why I'm also thinking about an Audi wagon but in RS guise. I've had a B6 S4 and it bored me. I said never another Audi - but then you can't really call an RS an Audi can you?

Right now I have my v8 e46 Beast for Fun - which is FUN - and I have my £600 e39 Bruiser for boring stuff. I can't fit my mountain bike in the boot of the Bruiser [unless I take off the handlebars] and if I wanna go camping [or even glamping] with some pals then I really need an estate - or a van. I can't quite bring myself to buy a Van for boring stuff although it probably is the best option. Maybe I should just get a tow bar for the Bruiser and a roof rack for bikes.
What I like is that it really isn't 'exciting' but it just gets the job done and is an effortless cruiser with tons of overtaking power. It really does shift but it's so quiet and pretty refined. Mrs9 refers to it as 'warp drive' when you put your foot down. I'm never going to sling it round a track so, as above, avoiding the costs associated with an M5/ RS6 was my goal.

I love your V8 e46, as you'll know from your thread. I do wonder whether the 'perfect' car for me would be something like an e39 Touring with a 525bhp crate LS3 in the front. That's the reason I asked you for conversion costs. Having only paid £6,600 for my 545i Touring (75,000 miles) though, the base + conversion + engine costs looked a bit painful in comparison.

In many ways, that makes the 550i Touring my 'perfect' OEM family car and we may never see its like again. I've gone out for quotes on a full, custom exhaust system for my 545i, just so a little more of that V8 burble is unleashed. I have also enquired as to the costs of an ESS supercharger supply + fit. Just for background knowledge, you understand.

I was thinking that the other day. The large-engine Tourings seem like real competitors to the Avants but BMW barely produce any and don't seem to push them. I guess the 320d rules the estate market frown

There are a LOT of x5 4.8 knocking around. I could almost see myself in one of them. But I'd really prefer a 2wd/rwd.

I also think the v10 M5 Touring is ace but I'd be scared of the go wrong bills and the single digit mpg. This is supposed to be my sensible car after all.

This is misplaced man-maths at it's best. hehe

Like an LS-engined e39 or supercharged 545i is going to be cheaper to run. biglaugh Buy an RS and put the conversion cost budget in your back pocket to run it on. thumbup

I almost went (back to an) X5 but I'm just not feeling the SUV here (I had mine when we lived in Texas). The V10 M5 is the dream but the bork fills me with fear! I'll have another look in a couple of years, I reckon.

This isn't Texas. We need to get as much Sun as we can here.

Why no love from all y'all for the good ole Sunshine roof?

I'm alllllllmost certain NOT to get SC as it will likely cost more (or around the same) as the car but it really, really does need an exhaust wink

I suspect the car + exhaust + SC would probably close in on conversion money, which closes in on M5 money... Of course, I think I could man-maths justify it in say a year or two, instead of changing cars wink

I think it stems from having a lovely of paper-thin 90s hot hatches, which became even more bendy with half a roof!

Also, with windows and AC, I am not sure why you'd want one, with the loss of rigidity and added weight... This is PH, right wink
