Hayward and Scott just quoted me £4,500 + VAT for a full (manifolds, cats, silencer etc) bespoke exhaust system... With a bit of man-maths, I think I can turn this around and use it to justify to Mrs9 why a supercharger would be better value
How much to supercharge it? And how many BHP does that give you?Is this the cheap way to get a 200mph 5 series estate? Sounds very cool.
I received an email today with a couple of links about the new Alfa Giulia. Ferrari-sourced power, dontcha know....
For a taster of the sound, look here from about 35 secs in.

Interesting weight related stuff in another article. Seems FIAT are rather serious about Alfa this time.
"Although the official weight wasn’t announced, Alfa Romeo is bragging that the Giulia has “an excellent power-to-weight ratio (remarkably lower than 3 kg/hp).” Carbon fiber can be found on the sedan’s propeller shaft, hood and roof, while aluminum was used for the engine, brakes, suspension, doors and wings. Even the rear crossmember has been manufactured from aluminum composite and plastic."

Whether this QV and the cooking versions are best-in-class or not, I don't really care (cars are generally so competent these days it's akin to complaining that the Victoria's Secret model you slept with wasn't the most attractive one), it's just fking great to see Jaguar and Alfa having a real go at the German 3 and introducing a bit (albeit not a lot) of variety to the sector.
As someone else may have said at some or other:
Approved!

I'm already thinking about a bigger exhaust for mine and it isn't charged - yet.

Could the standard pipes cope with all that extra gas flowing out under the car?

I am waiting for Simpson Motorsport to come back to me with a fitted price but I am expecting it to start with a £7, I reckon. So, probably prohibitive, to be honest.I'm already thinking about a bigger exhaust for mine and it isn't charged - yet.
Apparently the non-intercooled ESS kit adds 100bhp (not sure on torque) and the intercooled version something like 120bhp. This is all with the standard exhaust etc. I assume these figures could be improved with custom headers and 100/200 cell cats.
I have been quoted £850 for a bespoke cat-back (centre silencer delete) exhaust, which might give me the rumble I am looking for. Doesn't seem terrible value considering the cost for a full system (and cheaper than H&S's quote for the cat back part of their system).
Liking the sound of the Giulia as well - That could be a cracking car!

That's for an e39 (mine is an e61) and it looks like the backbox is on the 'wrong' side. Not sure that'll fit!
Ah ha. So you want to build a B5. I'm back on the page now.A B5 is what - £15 - £20k.
What I do know is my v8 has dual 2 inch pipes and apparently it is restrictive and it needs dual 2.5 inch really. I could ask Dyno Torque for a price but I bet it will be a lot less than the 4 grand you've been quoted. Shirley someone can throw one together for less than that.
Have you tried to buy a straight forward Alpina B5 or B5S system - there must be part numbers for it somewhere. Should fit straight onto your car too.

If you just want some noise and don't need the extra power that the above will presumably provide, a decent exhaust fabricator will be able to remove or replace existing silencers (and secondary cats if you have them) for a few hundred quid.I got a referral to this chap from a post on PH, he's based in Orpington, Kent. Link below is to an example of his work on a Mitsu Evo. He's switched on.

If you want to see the small job he did on my old car I'll post it up.
Seems slightly mad to spend several £K on a 545i when there are Alpinas and M5s about but it will make a good read if you do it!
I posted this a couple of months ago but I still think it's fantastic; love the XJ40 shape on the lattice alloys....

Looks great. How long has it taken for the wood to get that appearance?
About 2-3 years generally. They tend to look better a bit aged and weather beaten. Bit like me.L100NYY said:
Favourite wheel for the XJ. Set on Ebay currently, but she'd have me vivisected if I made a purchase at the moment. Maybe next year. <sigh>. Did I mention how much I'm liking my XJ?Back dated wheels on a more modern car never ends well, but I think the X300 can stand it.
^^^^^ Yep, that works.
This sounds intriguing....
