The Best ///M/Barge/General Rant/Look at this/O/T (Vol XVII)

i've only driven it around the underground car park. it needs registering which is proving to be a typical dubai clusterfk, and also needs a full engine and chassis service. we need to get out clio race ready and my elise back on the road before there's space in the workshop. we plan to drop the engine and do the work between the two of us. should be a fun project!
the car is very clean on the outside but slightly tatty inside due to track use. for waht he paid its a billy bargain. it has a 348gtc cage [though not the seats sadly] and exhaust [fruity!], some challenge car parts and some bespoke bits [brake ducts in the fog light position, very cool looking rear grille which has the 355 lights behind full width 348 slats]. all done to a high standard so it'd be interesting to trace the history. he's trying to source suitable wheels and seats at the moment, as well as the a/c components. ferrari tax is eye watering though. the tow hook its got fitted on the front is from the gtc, ferrari charge £500 for a new one!
seems that the road tests at the time were very complimentary. old top gear rates it highly, as did road and track. just seems to have been overshadowed by the 355 and, for some reason, derided for the side strakes. recent evo test praised the steering feel as being amongst the best they'd ever driven. that said, the pedal offset is comical.
seems that the suspension is easily adjusted to 355 specs and with more modern rubber it doesn't want to change ends quite so readily. andy hill's car shows what can be achieved from the platform:

not a fan of his car's cosmetics but the engine and chassis development is admirable. my mate is going to keep it true to its heritage and create a kind of jdm / italian race inspired track car. it'll deffo be seeing some action over winter.

Keep looking at this.
Drove a V8 years ago, much like. Surprised that prices have stayed sensible amongst the madness.
This would probably go bang rather fast, but looks like fun with 600 brake..Drove a V8 years ago, much like. Surprised that prices have stayed sensible amongst the madness.

I agree that it is now an integral part and the event is known as much for it as the racing. What irks me is not people dressing in period but, let's call it, excessive dressing up.
Maybe in part there is something in me that feels they are not taking it seriously, which sounds ridiculous, but in a "Isn't this all such jolly good fun" way which obviously it is, it's great fun but it's also serious racing and that element is not something that should be taken in vain.
I first went in 2001 - I think the Revival was only a few years old at that point - and the dressing up was integral then. The whole aim was a (light-hearted) recreation of a bygone era, thus the support vehicles, paddock and everything else including the crowd being encouraged to be in-period. That said, I don't quite understand why so many people want to dress in military gear for a 50s/60s car event.Maybe in part there is something in me that feels they are not taking it seriously, which sounds ridiculous, but in a "Isn't this all such jolly good fun" way which obviously it is, it's great fun but it's also serious racing and that element is not something that should be taken in vain.
If anything, I wonder if the racing has become a bit too serious. It is certainly different to the early days when my old Alfa's mechanic had his Giulietta on pole for the St Mary's Trophy. But in any case, I think it's an amazing event for getting non-petrolheads along to a fun day out for the petrolheads!
(Which is why I also like track days at Goodwood if wanting friends to attend. Getting friends to hang around at other tracks is pretty grim in comparison)

Anyway, enough of that. Here's a selection of adverts for the TR7. Rubbish car, great ads:
Exceptional The was an Esprit parked on the high street near me at the weekend, and it had a roof spoiler. Might seem unremarkable, but the roof spoiler was fitted at the leading edge of the roof, above the windscreen - similar to the front spoilers the US Countach got, but higher up.
Other than that bit of glorious bodywork, it looked fab.

For those of a slightly tweedy persuasion may appreciate this article, and the pretty pictures, just as much as I did;

Great photos. I bet that is an interesting event to attend and what sounds there must have been echoing off the hills.Grossglockner Grand Prix
