My 3.2S was a 2002 and had done circa 120k miles when I got rid of it. Engine was performing better than ever, never burnt any oil and pulled like a train.

Suspension etc was getting tired (and clonky), clutch was getting heavy and exhaust heat shield was needing to be replaced but no more than I would expect on a car of that type & age.

Shonky Yank bumpers aside, the X19 has got such a great shape. Not as popular in period as they should have been I don't think.

I always wanted to build a Bambino Ferrari with an X/19 when I was younger.

Early car with the little bumpers (or maybe neatly de-bumpered), rorty exhaust & induction, slightly lower, period (yet wider) wheels all finished off with a neatly uprated interior.

Natch.

Quick internet suggests track needs widening and frame chopping around.

I think this with an R1 engine needs a bit more downforce...

I'm not sure either. It has a bit more of a classic roadster profile to it, but the original 124 and mx-5 have that wheel at each corner look which suits the car more I think.

Is it heavier than the Mazda? It looks heavier.

It looks more like a facelift mk3 MX5 than a revision to the new model

That rear 3/4 view from above has a slight Maserati look to it but.....well.....the rest I'm just not sure.

I will reserve judgement until I see it in the flesh but I do feel it may be an opportunity missed to create an affordable and desirable Italian roadster a la Barchetta but with the steering wheel on the right hand side.

I am just trying to picture it slightly lower, in red, with a black bonnet and nicer alloys. Oh, and of course three pedals.

Indeed. Relatively common conversion that one yes

I'm thinking that the little Mazda V6 could work (a la MX3).
