hehe

Excluding front engined may be narrowing your choice a fair whack...

Have you considered reversing a Safrane V6? Ticks a lot of the boxes there...

Funnily enough I was just thinking late 80s/90 Alpine GTA V6.....

...... But then I read the last requirement.

I assumed he wants to move away from Porsche Boxster/Cayman and Exige V6 too dear

I have similar desires and have swapped from VX220 to Boxster twice now, and considering it a third time. I want the thrills/stiff chassis of the VX220 with some of the useability/quality of the Boxster - I don't think that exists though...

A few others I've considered:

TVR Tamora - scary running costs
Smart Roadster - that gearbox
Honda S2000 - getting a bit old and they have gone up in price recently
Lotus Evora - got potential but more than I want to spend, though should be fairly low depreciation

Any of the above any good for you?

This would be on my shortlist;

Evo 2014 -
"Tuning firm BBR’s latest Mazda MX-5 offering, the BBR GT270 Turbo. It has a faintly ridiculous 268bhp at 7350rpm (up 110bhp on standard) and a killer 227lb ft at 5100rpm (up 88lb ft)"

It's a nice photo smile

I thought there might be some compromise.

But as there's not, I reckon a Pontiac Fiero could be right up your Strasse.

Edit - actually, this doesn't tick all of your boxes either, but have you thought about an E28 528i or 535i? Definitely usable, feel smaller than they are, drive nicely, usable, blah blah blah. It's not mid-engined but it's pleasingly retro enough to feel alive. Handily, they're also appreciating.

Throw in some mods...

Perhaps a Zimmer Quicksilver would add the kwalitee edge missing in a standard Fiero?

Or maybe an E46 M3 and just drive backwards everywhere?

I missed the full history earlier. So this Cayman will soon be on engine number three? Ouch!

How about time for something completely different. Perhaps a comfy reliable barge of some description. Might save an absolute wedge for a little while. If that matters.

Was going to say Artega GT, but they're all DSG. Evora?

That's why an E28 535i is much less scary.

I've also been having E36 pangs. I've got the E39 530d as a compromise of something reasonably practical for 20k pa, but can tow enough. I'm going to get myself a van for towing cars around and to circuits, meaning I need something else for the other 19k pa. Head says 1.5 dCi Laguna, everything else says something else. And I do have a 328i vert somewhere. And a 525e. Or the depths of eBay for something non-BMW...
