M88/3 engine with BMW roundel, 'M Power' lettering and oil filler cap over the inlet cam....

S38B35 engine with 'BMW M Power' lettering, no roundel, and oil filler cap over the cam chains....

There are some differences with the airbox lettering but this effects both early and late versions of both M88 and S38 engines.

Seeing as that is the S38 B35, is it possible to get to E34 3.6 power with it, or was that another evolution with different engine architecture again?

Absolutely. I'd suggest wearing long arms and short pockets though.

Not just a case of hi-comp pistons? I guess just those could still be rather pricey...

That'd probably get you to M88/3 power rather than S38B36.

Also weren't the US cars badged as M6s?

Also also, the pic of the M635csi engine is my brother's old car.

Nice things to drive. Lovely delivery both aural and actual from the engine.

Probably unlikely. While the E24 and E34 Motorsport blocks and heads share a similar architecture the engines have completely different electronic engine management, different exhaust manifolds, induction systems, throttle management etc which all add up together to give the relatively modest 29bhp advantage over the M88/3 engine. Lack of physical space for the larger intake plenum, longer air-intakes and larger exhaust manifolds would be the first and most obvious hurdle, after that the rewiring for the later engine management might seem a breeze.
