My Dad has EVERY issue of CAR magazine since the 60's or early 70's!!
Can he have a look at the February 1977 issue and see if it has an article 'CONVOY' about 3 Lamborghini's being collected from the factory and driven back to the UK.I'm told it was the very 1st 'road trip', since copied numerous times by magazines and Top Gear etc.
If you could post up a copy I'm sure it would be an interesting read, particularly if it was the original 'road trip' as I'm told.

OH WOW.
The looks, the colour, the manual-ness.
Imagine a trip to the south of France in that.
Didn't Octane do just that recently? The looks, the colour, the manual-ness.
Imagine a trip to the south of France in that.

currently I'm mopping my brow with a paisley cravat as I sit on the hard shoulder of the A71, just south of Bourges; bonnet aloft, coolant trickling into the gutter, tweeting birds just about audible over the inexorable roar of progress as the rest of the world flies by in their wonderfully modern, reliable automobiles that aren't horrible bd creations from the epitome of seventies unionization and west-midlands fecklessness.

Superb....currently I'm mopping my brow with a paisley cravat as I sit on the hard shoulder of the A71, just south of Bourges; bonnet aloft, coolant trickling into the gutter, tweeting birds just about audible over the inexorable roar of progress as the rest of the world flies by in their wonderfully modern, reliable automobiles that aren't horrible bd creations from the epitome of seventies unionization and west-midlands fecklessness.
and so, so true...
Hence a 928 GTS 5-spd would always be my choice for such escapades!
After all, "Excellence was expected!"
That manual XJS has re-invigorated my imaginations of converting my ancient three speed auto 635CSi to a three pedal machine, but in over 100k miles in the last 18 years of my ownership the ZF3HP22 has never missed a beat or given anything less than a smooth change. It is a little high revving at illegal cruising speeds so a fourth overdriven auto ratio might help there but as an old and bold engineer always says, 'If it ain't broke...."

I don't know a lot about the early 3-spds in the 635 - I only had/have driven the "manly" manuals - E12 and E28 based, and also M30 and M88 engined. But if the later 4-spd is as nice as the one fitted to my brother's E30 325i Cabrio, then perhaps it is worth swapping in a 4-speed box to keep the waft factor? tenfour said:

I like the pre-HE manual V12 XJS (not for £20k+), but...
I have to admit the south of France in an old XJS doesn't appeal to me. It has me thinking of overheating engines in traffic and overheating brakes on route Napoleon, Grande Corniche etc.
I'd probably be tending towards full comfort (late 60s rolls/bentley) or mini-GT (Giulia Alfa). By the time I sold it my old Alfa would have lapped up the bombing down the autoroute and thereon to the route Napoleon.

Beautiful, absolutely beautiful, and at £10k a relative steal in comparison to 911s of similar vintage or even 928s...Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
