I've always preferred the ST205 but a Carlos Sainz GT4 wouldn't be kicked out of bed.

Can't say I've danced both the E30 and 190 2.5-16 on the edge of adhesion round the Nurburgring but I have driven them both reasonably fast on nice Welsh roads ( old 80s saloons are my big favourites in cars ). An old friend still has his Almandine 2.5-16 - I'm quite surprised people might say the handling isn't as 'friendly' although they might mean friendly to mean 'very adjustable' or something else. I would say the Merc is very benign and feels really 'planted' at the rear, certainly harder to get the rear end breaking away than an E30. The rear suspension is more advanced than the E30 I'd say. The steering is actually a quicker response than the E30 but not as 'feelsome'. What I have noticed on old stuff though, is that tyres can make a BIG difference to the feel of the car ....all else being equal. I still have a set of Toyo T1Rs virtually unused in the garage ( I should have sold them on ) which really cocked up the feel/handling of one old car I had. They were the only 205 sized tyre I could get a full set of at the time....but even after the releasing fluids wore off they didn't suit me. Expensive couple of months buying 2 sets of tyres in 3 months frown
Are you insane? Actual experience and facts over biased 'opposition' opinion?!

I did quite fancy a 190 Cosworth post E30 but as I'd sold that as I wanted something with a bit more pace it fell by the wayside so I never had the pleasure and as the rising tide has raised current prices it is unlikely to ever feature. Maybe that will be my loss.

I do like the idea of a veloured 2.6 though!!!

And talking of superchargers.

V8 engine = good

V8 engine with a supercharger = much goodness

V8 engine with two superchargers = heaven with a steering wheel

Spent most of the weekend sorting out the fleet...

Happy to report the following:

The 944 Turbo S racer now has a rifle bolt like gear change. New pinion bearing - £200+VAT alone for the part, which is only available through Porsche, new synchromesh on gears 3 and 4, new friction plates in the LSD diff, custom thickness splined plates in the LSD to increase preload to 180Nm from the factory 65Nm, new conical washers in the LSD, new gear change rod coupler bushing. Falling in love with it again.

The 928 GTS 5-spd - had a wash and brake inspection. Caliper plate lift has reared its ugly head on two of the calipers. New inner and outer seals/dust boots on order already. Will try and remove the plates - wish me luck! Also the aircon has developed a leak through one of the compressor's body O-rings. £250 for a brand new one or to re-seal the original one? Decisions, decisions... Next on the list - lift the intake and install the slightly bigger and newer spare M5 injectors - I have sharper cams in already and I also have the software/hardware to re-map it. Should see around 390bhp. I also decided that the car's bodywork will be properly restored. Doors off, glass out, wings off re-spray as well as suspension parts off to be vapour blasted and bushes renewed. It will not be cheap, but with 42 928GTS 5-spd ever registered in the UK in RHD I don't think I will ever lose money

The 996 GT3 CS - washed and polished. Fitted new Pagid RS29 on the front discs. Inspected all rose joints on the suspension for play. Wiped KWs clean. Checked for oil leaks. Thought how lucky I was to own it.

X5 - Had to give it a once over since it is taking us to Spa on Thursday for the CSCC race. I also just worked out we have had it for 12months. Magnificent. And why did BMW stop fitting the N62B48 into its cars, why???

I love my 550i for its engine - and also the box and non electric steering. It does however smoke sometimes. Do you get any smoke from yours?

Ours has done only 81k miles - have done 10k in the last 12mths. Used 2ltrs of oil - three towing trips with the 944 and 928 race cars as well as two dashes to Chamonix at about 90mph. Never smokes - even after sitting in London traffic with the oil temp close to 100C for an hour or so. Last service receipt shows a fill with Castrol Edge 0-30, I think will do it again as soon I am back from Spa...

my 4.4 540i smoked like a trooper.
I dont believe it is an oil viscosity related problem - although arguably super thick oil might make it less or a problem. I believe it is the valve stem oil seals which harden over time. As they harden they allow oil ingress into the combustion chamber. Maybe I need smoke free oil.

I had a 540iT M62B44 - no vanos - run it from 109 to 139k over 5 years. Did not use a drop of oil between services, made 293bhp on Charlie's dyno and went like the clappers when kick-down was engaged. Never smoked, apart from puffs of jet black when kick down was engaged at 80mph and would drop from 5th to 3d...

You have a nice fleet Cheburator and good effort on the home spannering !

Loon V600 is just a monster, proper fast armchair, smoking jacket, cravat and pipe at the ready....

I found this and never knew they even existed, or is it a home brew ? not sure what to make of it really, but my one trip in a Lotus Carlton made a lasting impression, it was chipped car and 3rd gear wheelspin was cool to a 17 year old...

Even worse - often it is not the valve seals which can be done in situ (not easy, but they could be changed with the help of a special tool) but the actual valve guides are made of Bavaria's finest processed cheese. Would not see change from at least £3k (cash in had, mates rates, backstreet garage) to do the job properly as pretty much the engine has to come apart and likely to be much dearer as there are a few things you may want to change while in there...
