Crappy econoboxes with fart cans are the main cause of noise pollution. They look and sound st and 99% of them are fitted with no other mods, or mods that give naff all benefit. There are some I4's that can pull it off but in the main I really dislike aftermarket exhausts on anything under 5 cylinders.
I agree with this. The chav cars with noisy exhausts tend to be driven around town several times a day just to really annoy everyone.
I prefer stealth cars that allow me to drive fast without being noticed.
This is also why I don't buy personal number plates.

On the current breed of turbo engines the right exhaust can really help free up a little more from the engine. If its properly designed rather than a 6" backbox from Halfords the pick up can be much nicer and the engine can sound a little more exciting when giving it the beans.
Again, when properly designed then at cruising speeds (or, more importantly, driving around residential area speeds) the exhaust can be perfectly civilised.
Strikes me as a bit odd that someone on a car enthusiasts forum cant understand the appeal of a 'sportier' sound, for lack of a better word.

To right. There are plenty of 4 cylinder engines that sound tremendous but apparently because this thread is a critical one suddenly high revving NAs , 4 cylinders+big turbos, whiny supercharged 4s, V4s, lovely twin carbs are all overlooked.
The twin 45 weber Carbs on my X-flow make more induction noise than the exhaust which isn't quiet to start with Put the 2 together, and you can set car alarms off.
Kind of suits the Caterham, but you have to be carful at tracks like Bedford where they are very strict on drive by noise

Loud exhaust on a road car = tw@t, whatever the car.
There must be a certain weakness in the head of those who potter down the High St with their F-type/Maserati/Ferrari/Subaru/Caterham popping and banging like a 3-year old with a trumpet and a drum.
In your irrelevant blinkered opinion...There must be a certain weakness in the head of those who potter down the High St with their F-type/Maserati/Ferrari/Subaru/Caterham popping and banging like a 3-year old with a trumpet and a drum.
I think quality of sound is far more important than volume but the best exhausts will have a balance between the two.
This does remind me of the time when I went to buy an MX5 from a deaf girl. The car sounded like it had no exhaust system at all and aside from the obvious issue of it turning me deaf in a matter of days it was also embarrassing to be seen in. Had that been a TVR it'd be a different story

I thought Katie Hopkins was in the big brother house? There must be a certain weakness in the head of those who potter down the High St with their F-type/Maserati/Ferrari/Subaru/Caterham popping and banging like a 3-year old with a trumpet and a drum.

Do you work for the Daily Mail? I definitely think you're on the wrong site. There must be a certain weakness in the head of those who potter down the High St with their F-type/Maserati/Ferrari/Subaru/Caterham popping and banging like a 3-year old with a trumpet and a drum.

I bet he wasn't running a standard exhaust.
My point.I think it's pretty obvious the problem lies in the lower end aftermarket tat. Nobody is really suggesting something like an E30 M3, BDA or anything else with a properly tuned manifold and exhaust is in the same league.

This is the sort of thing that I talking about. Your "road" car is so noisy, that even racing circuits are saying it too loud. When you're driving about it will set off car alarms?Kind of suits the Caterham, but you have to be carful at tracks like Bedford where they are very strict on drive by noise
As I said above, this sort of exhaust comes under chav or knob.

Not at all. What you forget is that "Max Power" magazine went out of business a very l-o-n-g time ago and there remains only a small handful of antisocial people who continue to follow their defunct mantra.Claudia Skies said:
