Look up tesla vs a 458 Italia on YouTube for a decent comparison. The same guy also puts the tesla up against his own aventator.

I can't post the links as I'm on my phone, but perhaps someone can do the honours?

I wouldn't take a tesla over either as a toy, but as a daily driver.....hell yes. The 700 bhp version is more efficient then the 400bhp version (in like for like driving)!
Seeing as you asked so nicely:

458:

Aventador:

Thanks. I got home and added the links at the same time smile
Again, hardly a fair test, the Aventador is lauched off idle without launch control and then gets short shifted into 2nd at only ~6500rpm, well short of peak power. Notice how fast it comes past the Tesla when it finally gets into it's power band!

the tesla could run 7 sec qtr's and it would still be as desirable as a dyson ...

the hellcat on the other hand scores a 11/10 on the desirometer biggrin
Pretty much what I thought until I had a Tesla for a week.

One point to consider is that the HC could do a 1/4 mile until either the tyres melted or petrol ran out.
I would be surprised if the tesla could operate at full power before having heat issues.

I think he would have still won in a Leaf, was that pass 17.2 seconds, most half decent hot hatches can better that, this was a battle between the Tesla having 4wd and being very easy to drive and 700 odd bhp and a driver who hadnt a clue.

I still dont think that the Hellcat would have bettered the Tesla, even if fitted with Drag slicks, might have been about the same at best.

Thats the second version of the Tesla, makes you wonder what they will be able to do in future.
Seen other clips of Hellcat's doing low 11's so it would have been close but the Tesla is 4wd so ot's no surprise he ran a decent time.

Driven that Tesla in Norway it is something else! I was deeply skeptical about a performance EV but came away impressed. Its the automotive equivalent of an iphone: sleek design, impressively efficient but not everyone's cup of tea.

Yea but look what happened when it went up against a GT-R & the GT-R driver fluffed the start.

That's the S not the D. The D is 4wd, and 700 bhp. It's a bit quicker now smile

It's also more efficient then the old 400bhp model.

One is a hugely impressive technical achievement. The other one is the one I'd want to own.

I'd like to see them do that after they've both driven 100 miles to the drag strip.

These electric cars will become the fastest accelerating road cars very soon they have come along way since milk floats.
I think the hybrids will get there first.

Quite an instresting discusion this, with all sorts of justifications for why this or that happened....bearing in mind the Tesal is a new age luxo-barge, the very fact its being discussed and comapred with Aventadors, 458's Hellcats and GTRs says it all really...
I'd like to see it up against it's natural competition...Panamera's, Rapide's and AMG stuff...

The Tesla is desirable in my opinion, it looks great, regardless of powertrain it stands out in it's class for it's styling alone. As another commenter i was also in one at the weekend, a taxi in amsterdam (they're everywhere, it seems) but still a rare sight over here and it felt great to ride in, interior is nice, it's spacious, and the acceleration is very good.

I'd urge everyone to go for a test drive in a Tesla S and not judge them until you do.

Plenty of fun to be had between 0 and 30 mph if you can do it quicker than pretty much any other car on the road. The lack of fuss is part of the game.

I disagree. It is a very nice bit of engineering and technology wrapped up in a nice looking shell. Very cheap to run and would make a great commuter.

BUT fun to drive it absolutely is not. 2.2 tonnes, no gear stick, no noise and large dimensions see to this IMO, despite being one of the fastest accelerating car I have ever been in.

Same as my washing machine then that doesn't make a fuss either!
Its a faster way to how all cars seem to be heading ie utterly uninvolving to drive grimly efficient and soulless !!

What a ridiculoius post. When an energy form like this is in it's infancy, how on earth can you pre-judge the future of it?
It's akin to spectators watching the Wright brothers and thumbing their noses at them... I mean, such a horrible ugly contraption with stupid noises and such.. a balloon has much more soul and grace.. there is nothing intersting in the'aeroplane'

Rubbish !!! Some of the very first cars were electric !!
This technology will be fine when they make a self driving car, and its not going to long before there are so many rules and
Speed limits driving will be utterly depressing we will welcome the driverless car.
Until then I'll stick with the wonder of internal combustion!!

care to post the numbers of electric vs IC cars on the road since their invention?
Perhaps find out the amount of dollars spent on R&D for each power train?
I think you'll find, although happy to be proved wrong, that IC has had the lion's share and as such electric is still very much in it's infancy..
I'm sticking with IC at the moment also...but I reckon I'll be choosing to drive an elctric car for fun before I shuffle off...

really, the washing machine line? Anyway, my point was that I find the S anything but grim and soulless even in traffic precisely because of the acceleration: Elon's strategy is to make his cars enjoyable to drive and better than anything in the segment they are in. As British Beef says, this is a large, heavy saloon/hatchback so its real peers are Panamera, Jag XJ, Merc SLS or even S etc. so not really fun car territory, which is why the 0-30/40/50 is such a blast.

The noise thing always comes up. But how many people actually enjoy the clatter of a diesel revving hard? My BMW 123d was brilliant but the noise wasn't tuneful. Granted there are petrol engines and exhausts that deserve to be heard, but they are a small minority.

Each to their own. Enjoy the cheap fuel while it lasts.
