Talking in the pub with some mates whether an E46 330 engine would fit in the boot of an E46 tourer to transport and got me wondering

So have you ever?

Which car and what engine?

I'm pretty sure I've seen pictures of BMW straight sixes in tourers before now.

Personally I've had a 1.6l Caterham engine in the back of a Clio and two 1.6l Caterham engines in a BMW tourer

I've had an Impreza STi engine, including all ancilleries still fitted, in the boot of my old Mk1 Focus, the parcel shelf still fitted and the rear seats were still up right, from the outside the only give away was the bonnet aiming for the sky, although the performance took a proper hit!

I sold a Mazda 323 Turbo engine to a guy, who borrowed his mums Nissan Micra to pick it up.

He didn't think he would get it in his mx5, but I hope he did in the end.

I've moved an A-series in the back of a Fiat Punto hatchback. These days I tend to use a trailer; less messy.

Not an estate car, but we have taken a k series elise engine & gearbox in the back of a ford puma before.
If I remember correctly we did have to take the boot lid off to get the engine crane arm high enough.

A 6 cylinder is going to weigh more than a 4 pot, especially a K series, but yes, it shouldn't be a problem.
Over inflate your rear tyres, place a strong board on the boot floor spanning the strongest sections, brace down somehow. Avoid icy conditions and accelerating crazy away from roundabouts and you'll be fine

I would strongly recommend tying it down somehow. Otherwise if you were to have an accident, even a relatively minor one, you'd end up with an engine embedded in the back of your head.

the best way of keeping it in your preferred upright position is to have a few tyres in the boot to wedge it in place, I'm not sure you could ever keep it in place if you were unlucky enough to have a crash but you can put a towing strap round it/through the manifold or something and have that tied to your tow bar or towing eye with the tailgate closed over the strap.

Does the E46 not have tie-down points in the boot? I assumed all estate cars did.

Yep, I moved a ford escort engine in the back of a Granada.

Well, it was there for a short period of time....I accelerated hhard forgetting it was there and it rolled back, smashed the tailagte and window and ended up on the road. Granada required new tailgate and work on the hinges.

Regularly moved engines and a crane in the back of a Picasso I have kicking around laugh - I suppose it is a bit van-like though
